Upgrade Tyre Size

Postby elgammal » Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:37 am

hi all,
I would appreciate it, if you could give me some advice concerning my tyres. I own megane II hatchback 1.6 R15 195/65, which is the stock wheels. I would like to widen them a little bit. I mean going for 215/55 or 205/55. I need a tyre size that will never cause any harm to my car. Please give me technical information if you can, and reply me as soon as possible.

Regards,

Have a look at this, it should help?

You need to be careful when fitting different tyres to your car as it will affect the accuracy of your speedo.

The point is that I would like to buy R16 or R17 alloys. hence, I’d like to know the best wheel size for both that will never harm the car. i mean some mechanics in egypt say that R17 would cause pressure to suspension?

Also, I would like to buy chrome alloys. Does anybody know any disadvantage of the chrome alloys (could it be easily scratched, or the shine fades after a while ...etc.)?

Thanks,

Ah it all becomes clear now.

Right if you want to go to 16" rims then you will need to fit 205 55 R16 tyres. If you want to go to 17" rims then you will need to fit 205 50 R17 tyres.

Both of these will preserve the accuracy of your speedo, however you will get a much harsher ride than you currently have now, on your 15" rims, particularly if you go for the 17" ones.

Most Megane's in the UK tend to have 16" wheels on them.

As for Chrome alloy's, sorry no experence of them so can't offer you any advise, but I'm sure somebody else will.

Please guys,

My stock rims are R15 195/65. I need advice urgently, whether to fit R16 215/55 or R17 225/45. put into consideration that I need my car to be at the same height and the closest suspension comfort & at the same time I need an attractive sporty look.

Please advice as soon as you can….

Thanks,

When you have alloys 17"x 7J the best tyre size for your Megg is 17x45x215. Still comfortable but good looking.

The 45 profile tyre will be more "uncomfortable" because of it's lower profile (less flexibility in the side wall)
How much you will notice this is questionable?

I have 225/45/18 on mine and to be honest ,the ride is alot better , a little bit more road noise , but the grip and handling is far more better , but I guess most of it is down to what tyre your using .I have just ordered a set of toyo for the summer, will post when I get them fitted with results.

The 205 50 17" tyres aren't noisy......
