New owner. What have I done!

Postby Davemc » Sat Apr 08, 2017 7:28 pm

Hi folks new to the forum in search for guidance.

Just bought a 2004 Renault megane 1.6 CC with a few niggles I hope to get through easily.

One of them is I have to bump start it as it says select neutral on the dash when it is press clutch or brake to start but doesn't. Found a broken wire at the clutch pedal so once i fix that hopefully that's that!

But my biggest problem is the roof! It says check roll bars bday read just push them down so back seats remove and top trip to reveal!!! The roll bars have been removed!! So going to have to source them there are holes that something was bolted there but been removed so not sure what else is missing is there motors there or is the removed bolts just from the roll bars. Hope there's one in the scrap yard tomorrow I can have a good rummage into

Also the boot won't open I can pull it up and down a little but won't open and pushing the bottom there's no sound of it releasing.

I've got a few things to check tomorrow but hopefully some comments here can help me go in guns blazzing

Welcome along :tu

The broken wire at the clutch pedal is quite a common thing.

I can't comment on the rest of your maladies but hopefully someone will be along soon that can.

Don't think roof will open if the boot is playing up quite possibly its the boot lock there is a manual over ride next the the number plat lamps it uses the emergency key from the card pop it into lock turn it and it should open.
What idiot would remove the roll bars... If it rolls the windscreen surround and those roll bars keep you off the tarmac (allegedly.. Not tried it personally).
Meg cc's have two types of roll bar (rear head rest) I think it was a factory order you get a standard roll bar which was fixed which mine has from what I have seen of mine there doesn't seem to be any electrical connectors on it. There is also an "explosive" roll bar which when activated when the vehicle senses a roll over extends the rear black rubber coated head rest, they will have electrical sensors in them so if they are not there roof will complain again, roof will also not open if boot blind is not in place.
Good luck and welcome the diamond of doom!

Cheers for the replies guys here's an update.

Opened the boot with the key easily thankfully looking at other people struggling and found the roll bars in there. I think I've an electrical issue with the boot lock as the mechanism is moving about ok not tight locks unlocks well. I'll need to look at wiring for it.

I went to the scrap yard an replaced the whole roll bar units and cage removed mine no electrical connections to say what position it's in replaced with the same type. I've put a diagnostic tool on it and it's set to the moving type and I can't change it to the fixed type I think I need renaults own software to do it but we have a new updated tool coming tomorrow so fingers crossed.

It looks to have had a wee dint in the rear bumper going to see if there are any impact sensors in there that may be damaged that could also cause this and maybe fix my rear parking sensors too!

Managed to fix the starting issue it was indeed the clutch pedal wiring

Some more findings.

I removed the wiring cover to find all wires are ok checked continuity and all check out good I have found though that I am only getting 2v to the boot switch and lock checked at the loom side and it's the cars look that isn't sending enough volts to the boot. Although the lights and Renault badge button work to lock the car it's only the boot switch and lock that isn't getting enough power.

Does anyone know of any other common areas that are effected with wiring faults that I can investigate??

Hiya folks forgot I had this car as it's been at the garage for a month haha. The ecu that was fitted was from a different car with the extending roll bars so he coded it back to fixed type and the roof started to work but still doesn't work properly.

The roof goes into the boot then fails the parcel shelf stays up and the boot stays open. Also the near rear passenger window stays up but it does operate off he switches. I need update exactly how it works but going to go to the scrap yard and grab a window module.

Any others able to give advice to my current problem??

Hiya bud you seem to be the man in the know going by replies to roof related problems on the forum and hoping you could help me out a bit.

Just now I've a problem with my roof going down and wondering if you know how many position sensors there is.

The first common one on the windscreen is free and moving fine and when I had a computer on it (very early stages to the problems I've had don't have access to it now) it showed open close when pressing it with my finger so I know it was fine

What the roof is doing is the boot opens up unlocks from the windscreen and starts to lift.

The front of the roof gets to about half way say above start of rear seats and stops roof malfunction I can keep pressing the button on until it stops again all the way into the boot but the boot stays open. If I have someone put pressure on the boot and keep pressing the boot will go down but won't lock into position don't think it knows it's at it's final position to lock things up. The roof won't return I need to wait till the pump loses pressure lift the roof up manually to about half way again before I can use the button to close it again.

I'm starting to think it's the pump but it's one of the last things I really want to change. I fitted two solenoids to the pump I got from the scrap yard to no avail.

Original problem was someone fitted the wrong ecu to the car a type from the ones with the raised roll bars so I got the ecu codded to say it's the fixed type and now I'm left with this problem.

Able to shed any light on this? Maybe get back on a computer and reset position or once it's fully closed (gives the beep of indication it's finished) should it not now know it's position as all windows go up once closed. Also they all go down when starting the procedure the near rear window is working fine unlike some others on here who have that problem

Perhaps this was the origonal issue I think I would be asking myself why it was changed and more to the point where did the rear head rests go and why? Possibly contact last owner.
Rear window not working wont affect roof op mine pass rear didn't work for years yet roof worked perfectly.
Roof is initially working ok its dropping windows, unlocking, and raising roof but stopping mid cycle, so could be a number of issues.
Has the pump enough oil/corrert oil (its about £25 a small bottle special stuff)
Are the solenoids u bought working ok.
The boot won't lock because it hasn't completed its opening cycle itself, you have a complicated problem here not helped by wrong parts fitted and important parts missing.
Take it a step at a time you need to get roof into boot under its own steam I think its positioning is ok as it starts the open cycle quite happily doing all it needs to stow roof only failing at the change over from the lift to the controlled drop into boot.
Oil would be my first stop.
Check rear parcel shelf is lifting as it should but again if it doesn't I belive roof will just break it.
No idea where stop sensor is in boot. However it doesn't get that far. It stops mid cycle you might well be looking at a pump.
Usually if there is any issues with the roof sensor wise its simply does not work and reports a roof malfunction.
this is real interesting one!!! Hardly anyone on this site would attempt a self repair. ......GOOD ON YOU!!!

Cheers Chris I did message you the same thing as you seem pretty knowledgeable in these Megan cc section. I changed the whole back panel and have the fixed roll bars fitted. Got them from the scrap yard.

The solenoids I'm guessing are ok as the roofs doing the exact same thing.

The parcel shelf does raise and lowers correctly (when I apply pressure to the boot and keep pressing the button to lower the boot lid once it's in the boot, again need to keep hitting the button to get the roof into boot doesn't go in one go)

I think I might have a bent arm on the offside. When the roof is locked up looking at the arms (all interior trim is removed) there's two Wee prongs that look like a upside down T two either side on the offside one is extremely close to the arm compared to the other with a thumb width gap. I'll get a picture and upload what I mean next time and hope to god someone has there trims off and can compare unless it's a trip to the scrap yard for me to compare and if there the same I'm starting to think it may be the pump giving up mid way and having to keep pressing it.

The fluid is fine sitting level on max

Or maybe even the roof ecu that's under the pump hopefully can grab one with the same part numbers. Heard they differ with year of car

So I was the victim of the notorious windscreen switch.

My backwards thinking was the switch was pressed when closed when in fact it's released and when the roof going up the lever was literally 1mm away from pressing the switch to say it was open therefore getting the roof all confused and stopped working thinking it was still closed.

Even if the lever moves freely as mine did it didn't go all the way home and just missed pressing the switch.
Honestly if you have this problem open the roof remove the trim 2min job and see if it goes all the way home. Mine was fixed with wd40 and working the lever until it was snapping back all the way home pressing the switch.

Don't always trust obd computers without seeing the switches visually being pressed and then see if it changes to open / close to identify faulty sensors haha.

Feel like a propper nugget but saying that the car was with a Renault specialist who couldn't find the fault either and told me it's terminal and need a new roof!!

Don't feel to bad I work for a VW dealership and we have had an eos in now for 3 months with a roof issue.
It came in with a jammed sun roof, pushed back in place and taped up. We changed sun roof cables and spider guide roof didn't work as motor was skipping on main roof cables so removed spider guide and threaded new roof cables and reassembled, try roof starts to open then motor gives up.
One new motor later roof half opens and jams on closer inspection the sun roof Channel's are slightly damaged so. 2 new channels fitted noted then that sunroof guides where worn so a set of small plastic caps at £80 (OMG) and roof I'd on the move again.. Super...opens then closes one more try sun roof opens roof starts to move then stop! Motor gone (again) replace motor and drive gear
We now look at roof stop guides and notice one is bent and damaged so replace that as well now roof closes but won't open roof ecu reprogrammed still nothing so left battery off over night and lucky for us it works seems it didn't finish its learning process so was stuck in limbo.
Roof now OK opens and shuts on its fourth try roof stops on open cycle.... Aaaahhhhhhh.
Its now caught a parcel shelf string (which we routed wrong) and snapped it so a new set of strings on order at £145 yes that's right for some strings.
3 months later and £1000 in parts roof on eos now works. You thought Renault roofs where complicated the eos is incredible and massively over complicated. That was 3 months with our mater tec who is also the eos specialist. So as you can see they can catch the best of us out and the specifically trained as well.
So as said before we done to you especially when there is virtually no roof info out there, I doff my cap to you :grin

I ana mechanic to trade but a bus mechanic so having to take a car to another garage to look at really riled me up haha.

But the ecu was changed at some point thinking it had the raised roll bars.

Over all this should have cost me £55 to fix 45 on ecu reprogram and £10 on roll bar bolts as my old bars were in the boot and just needed refitting and wd40 to free switch haha instead!!

I bought a whole fixed roll bar assembly £50 garage labour £150 that they found nothing and told me it's terminal £20 on middle rams

The car is now fixed and up for sale haha

It's the red one on eBay sitting at £650 on auction
