Can anyone recommend a good OBD adaptor

Postby candleman » Fri Aug 22, 2014 7:13 pm

Can anyone recommend a good bluetooth OBD adaptor which works with diesels? I've bought a couple from e-bay which claim to be suitable for diesel but won't connect with the ecu. They all work with petrol just fine.

Hope you can help

Hello, I am owning a 1.5 dCi 2006 and have succesfully used a simple OBD bluetooth adapter from Ebay in combination with OBD Droidscan on my android tablet. Gives about 10 parameters as read out (not a lot), though best thing is that it reads fault codes good. I have found an camshaft sensor issue with my car with help of this set. Hope this helps.

I have this and use the torque pro app on android...I've used this in my megane, my dads Citroen berlingo van, and a friends hyundai tuscan. Worked in all 3 I know the tusan was diesel. Not sure about the van.

Gives me loads of sensors to watch, and fault diagnostics. When I got this I saw an error regarding cylinder 3 misfire. Also allowed me to clear the logs

I've used one of these with the Android Torque lite app on a 2004 Megane 1.9DCi and it works fine to display the engine info. I didn't have any fault codes to read or reset, so I can't comment if that bit of it works or not.

I am also using one of these ELM327, but with Scanmaster software in a XP laptop. BTW, ELM327 can be of different versions: 1.3a, 1.4b or 2.1. There is no such a thing as 1.5!

In theory, all functions of the device are accessible without any special software - just read the manual for the chip and type the AT commands in the terminal programme. Scanmaster includes both a terminal and a nice graphical interface. One may need a terminal in order to reset airbags, ABS light, etc.

Hi Guys,

Just to let you know bought a Pro-Scan adaptor from E-bay, about £10. Came at the weekend and works fine with my 55 plate 1.5dci. running OBD auto doctor on my windows smartphone.

It is possible to reset the ABS and airbag with ELM327, but one will have to type the AT commands in a terminal window. Something like these:

Set access mode
AT SH 6C 28/58(ABS/airbag) F1 return

Read the codes (optionally)
19 D2 FF 00 return

Reset
14 return

where do you have the list of recognized commands to send to the unit? and of course how to decode the answer... :)

Picked up from the web ages ago, probably from a developers' forum for open source OBD. A general explanation about the packets and headers can be found in ELM327 datasheet, but no destination addresses.

The response from OBD is in ASCII characters, just meaningful text. For example, when establishing the connection it responds "OK", unless the destination code is incorrect. I cheated by letting Scanmaster to detect the protocol, but the detection is also possible with AT commands (on hands and knees). Again, this is only tested with real faults on an Audi TTS, as both my Renaults have been bullet-proof.

ELM327 should work. The full OBD became mandatory only in 2004, but it was implemented in Renaults much earlier. Yours most likely have a K-line interface supported by ELM327. As for interface connectors, there existed a confusion long ago related to some pins being different between the manufacturers. Therefore, it always makes sense to check if someone used successfully some particular deviceon some particular vehicle. I used ELM327 on a 53 plate 1.9dci, it worked.
