Vibrating Cabin and moving gearstick?

Postby DanDCI » Sat Dec 14, 2013 8:23 pm

Hi,

1.5Dci 56 plate.

When idle, cold and warm (sometimes it doesnt do it at all) the cabin will vibrate quite violently (bearing in mind I'm used to driving an old Astra diesel which didnt vibrate at all). If I touch the accelerator it goes away. What's this issue? I've read a few things but most point back to engine mounts? :eek

And the gearstick, 3rd and 5th is the worst, but the stick moves all on it's own when you accelerate. Surely this cant be normal?

yes def your engine mount because my engine vibrates, the mechanic asked me is the gear stick moving, my gear stick doesnt move, he said if the gear stick moves its the mount under the engine, mine wasnt that mount and still vibrates......

My gear stick moves alot but mainly in 1st and second especially if you jab the accelerator. Changed the mount underneath but still the same. All other mounts look ok. '08 1.5 dci 106

This can be as simple as a wheel that has lost balance. (balancing weight has fallen off)

And a vibrating cabin / gearstick and S. wheel would be a give away.

£20 well spent to have the wheel rebalanced.

Or at least a cheep way to negate the a cause.

Unbalanced wheels only cause judder and vibration, nothing to do with the engine moving to and fro. I suspect a engine mount although they look fine.

Shouldnt be a wheel balance issue, had 4 tyres about a month or so ago and only done x00 miles since. Also wouldnt explain it at stand still

I'm not particularly bothered about it, but when it next goes to my mechanic for something (due an oil change in the new year) I'll get him to look at the mounts.

I'm guessing if I replace with genuine parts the same thing is only going to happen again, so is there an aftermarket part that's better(surely cant be worse than standard fit!)

When I first bought my 1.9dci (2004) it vibrated very badly when idling, particularly if I'd been on a longish run first. The main cause as far as I can tell was the EGR valve plus the 'gap' between the intercooler pipe and EGR valve being coked up and blocked - due to the turbo failing previous year and the mess not being cleaned up properly. Cleaned the EGR valve and opened the gap and car ran smoothly again. With mine the breather tube between the bottom of the oil filler bottle and engine was also blocked but I don't think this caused the rough idle.

A year later it has started to show the same problem although no where near as bad and I have just cleaned the valve again which helped but has not entirely eliminated the roughness. I've decided to live with it as the car isn't worth spening £500+ getting the turbo removed and checked out (which I suspect has leaky oil seals). I'll wait for the next drastic fault and scrap it.
