Originally the car started playing up whilst driving along,
the wipers would automatically come on
the doors were locking and unlocking
the hazards stayed lit up
the engine wouldnt turn off using the button - The only way it would stop was by disconnecting the battery
various messages appeared on the dash display - steering column locked and then electrical fault.
eventually the car wouldnt start and just had the message electrical fault permently on the dash.
If you have similar problems this is what i would recommend to do as it fixed mine 1.9 DCi
a common fault on these is water entering the fuse box in the egine bay or UCH box i think they are called situated next to the battery.
It is quite easy to check this even if you dont really work on cars.
Firstly remove the main car battery and remove the fuse box cover
un clip all the loom connectors ( when doing this check all the pins on the connectors look for any signs of corrosion).
remove the bolt located at the front of the fuse box which is connecting a red power cable to the box and then it should be free to remove.
the unit can be split but be careful not to break the catches and check for any wetness also check the pins to see if any are loose or corroded.
Water usually get in by the compartment below your wipers filling up with water, the drain holes get blocked pretty easily so i advise these are checked, i emptied a couple of bucket loads
On my car there was obvious evidence that water had got into the fuse box and the brown plug on the loom looked badly corroded which is for the card reader, clutch and brake pedal switch and wipers wich explained all the madness before it broke down and why it wouldnt start. I was quoted £2500 from renault to fix the problem they said i would need a complete loom and a new fuse box.
I managed to buy a wiring loom off ebay which had been removed from a crash damaged car which was still running for £50 i removed the corroded plug and soldered it to my wiring loom. I also bought a fuse box from renault for £160 and fitted it myself which took all of 10 minutes. I then towed the car to Renault and got them to programme the new fuse box unit which they charged £40.
Bingo job done for £250 (a nice saving of £2250) cars back on the road
Im no mechanic and i fould it and easy enough job i just like to tinkle with cars
I hope this helps anyone with the same problem.
