7 Speed Gear box

Postby wanda » Mon Mar 30, 2009 9:19 am

Dont you think it would be a good idea? If Lexus can have 8 and merc 7 in auto form why cant car companies develop a manual 7 speed box? Would be lovely for cruising.

how would you go about selecting the right gear? with 6 your stick sits in between 3 and 4 so you can go left for 1st/2nd and right for 5th/6th. you would need something like the lift up for reverse system. Also it means the gearbox has to be even longer, in which case it may start protruding into the wheel arch hampering the right lock. I know on my old 306 GTi6 the box was so long the right turn was absolutely shocking.

Why would there be a need for a 7 or 8 speed manual gearbox in the average family car?

You will probably note that the mercs and lexus cars these auto boxes are fitted to are pretty powerful and make use of the extra gear to attain the ridiculesly high top speeds they have.

A six speed box in the average Diesel car will allow for around 2000-2200rpm at 70-80mph, any lower and the engine would be asleep

Also these 7 & 8 ratio auto boxes have been criticised in the past for "hunting" for the correct gear.

With a seventh gear you could bring the revs down to 2000 at 70 which is were my max. torque is (for example). Which would be good for cruising and fuel economy

A 7-speed gearbox is technical far more complex and therefore more expensive, so it would increase the price of the car.

Also a 7-speed takes more space and weight than a 5 or 6-speed, and we all know that weight is not good for fuel economy ;-)

I only have a 4-speed... :-(

surely the benefits of the engine working "less hard" surpasses the additional weight. I would pay extra ££ for it actually even in the future as longas it would fit.

In the Bugatti Veyron you don't change into seventh gear till you hit 230mph. Dont think i need seven gears in the dCi

Does anyone else do what i do when wife/someone else is driving their Megane.
Cruising along in 5th and you look across and say "there's another gear if you want to use it".
Think i'm turning into my dad :eek I remember the olden days when he used to say that to me about 5th!!

On the other hand i drive the wifes car and lose count of the number of times i slip it from 5th back into 5th when i realise there's no 6th!!
