Just wondering what is inside the torpedo part(big bit that pushes into ciggy socket) of a phone/sat nav charger? Is it full of resistors/electrical thingummies that i know nothing about or is it just 2 wires.
Asking as i'm in process of running charger cables behind dash and was going to cut big black connector off and just splice wires behind ciggy lighter.
Hope this is understandable.
Nick.

You just have 2 wires mate poss and neg the bullet bit has a glass fuse that fits in side the black bit
just cut them off and connect possitive to a fuse holder and blck to neg you should be fine

Cool cheers Stevie.
Thought i'd best ask before i blew my phone or worse laptop up, 20 different forms for an ink cartridge so i dread to think what i'd have to do to get a new phone or computer

STOP.
The above post is completely wrong. Most devices DO NOT use 12v, the output from the cigarette charger. The plug on the end (in most cases) will include a transformer to convert the 12v from the socket to (for example) 5v for Tomtom sat nav units. You MUST NOT cut the end off and directly connect it to the back of the socket or similar, this will kill your device.

I would be very careful. Most of those power adaptors contain a step down transformer... To lower the voltage and current for the required device. For example the supplied voltage from the fag lighter is 12V at 7.5 amps. My phone requires 5.0V at 0.7amps. So if there was a V / C that hadn’t been stepped down the phone would heat up then fry. As soon as you strip the 'bullet adaptor' you shall see this. If you are half decent with wiring it would not be a problem to strip it and hide it within the dash, if doing so be careful as they are polarity dependant and should be well insulated.

Well it's lucky i'm not impatient like Ruud and rushed out and done it
Now re thinking this idea, like i said work might not be too happy.
Plan B is now in operation, this will involve one of those multi sockets for ciggy lighter. Can hide it behind dash somewhere and just plug all hidden cables straight into it.
Now wondering though, my sat nav and bluetooth headset have same charger socket so i tend to use just the one charger

They may look the same but are the specs the same? Also if you use one for both you run the risk of blowing a fuse if the amp draw is to great, as you are playing with a max output of 7.5amps if taking a link from the fag lighter. What I have done is take a direct link form the battery then stepping down/up as required. You have to be very careful if the voltage is out by 1.5/2V or 05. 1 Amp you are in danger of frying your bit of tech. Ohm's law come into play here (I=V/R)
