Paint Repair/Renovation Theory

I threw this together for another forum. Similar/Better examples do exist elsewhere on the interweb...

It's a useful quick reference to what you need to do to repair certain paint defects. Some people don't realise there are 3 layers on top of their panel that make up the paint. Some cars have soft paint (jap) some have harder paint (euro) some don't use a clear coat/lacquer at all - this was popular in the early 90's = the once red now pink Astra's and Fiesta's etc so this is by no means a comprehensive guide but it's a good "rule of thumb"

In the never ending quest for shiny paintwork the idea is to have no "defects" on ones paint. Whether it's something stuck to the surface - dirt, oxidization, Industrial fallout, tar etc etc. Or anything that breaches the lacquer will instantly dull the shine - the reason behind this is because the light hits the scratches and is bounced back in various directions. Rather than being a smooth mirror surface.

This is a good example:

Cheers Dan,

Very informative. What products to use though?

I often frequent DW too - I picked mot of my theory up from those guys. There is an awful lot of knowledge there! I did do the diagram myself, only in paint though!
