Recently purchased Megane duesel on a 57 plate looked at a number of vehicles both the 86BHP and 106BHP guise before finally decided on the 86BHP ehen test driving I did expereience a noticeable difference in performance between the two variant.s My question is are both engines fundamentally the same? is the 86Bhp simply a "detuned" version therefore would a remap of the ECU provide increased power output to 106Bhp ? are there any other notable engine differences ?

thanks
Darren

My understanding is that the 86bhp will map to around 100bhp. The 100/106 engines will map to around 130bhp. There is a good gain in torque too. The 86bhp engines are different to the 100/106s.

Totally different engines. The more powerful one has different HP pump (Siemens VDO vs. Delphi on the 86 BHP) and different type of injectors (piezo vs. solenoid on the 86 BHP). Another difference is in the turbo charger, the more powerful one has variable geometry turbo. Finally, the smaller engine has higher compression ratio and smaller piston displacement. You can try and tune your engine, but the feeling won't be the same and the engine components will suffer from higher pressures and temperatures (HP pump, turbine housing, blades and sleeve bearing, piston heads, valve heads etc).
