Service and other costs
Hi all,
I am looking to have my Meg serviced soon at Renault Oldham. What sort of price would you think is about right? My car is a 2005 having done 24,500 miles. At the last service (which was done at an independant) the pollen and fuel filter was changed, as well as the usual other stuff.
It is also in need of a timing belt at the same time. What sort of cost should this be at a main dealer? I have heard it is very steep. Is it best to have the accessory belt changed at the same time? I know some people recommend to have the water pump changed as well but as it has covered less than 25K I think it should be fine for another 5 years.
The other thing I wonder about is the oil they will use. Will they use the best specification oil for my car, or will they use a generic one which is acceptable for most of the Renault models? I worry about this as we asked SEAT about servicing my brother Arosa and they said they just use 15/W40 for all models which can't be the best for all of them.
Sorry for being a bit long winded but it's the first service I'm having on this car as I only got it last June.
Cheers in advance,
Ant.

Re: Service and other costs
yea thats cambelt change and everything in. oil, filters... a fair bit gets changed i think, but with dealer prices, most is in the labour. not sure if waterpump is changed. probably not.
From John Delaney motors in Stockport (near my work/Audi garage) I got the following quote:
MOT £45.00 NO VAT
Service £200.00 PLUS VAT (YOU OWN OIL SUPPLIED)
Timing Belt, Waterpump,Antifreeze, Fan Belt and Tensioner
Radiator Cap, Brake Fluid Change £470.00 PLUS VAT
Courtesy Car £6.00 Plus Vat
I prefer to buy my own oil from opie oils as least then i know what'd going in my car.

OK cheers for that. I will probably go to an independant and supply my own oil. I would normally do it myself but with the AA warranty you have to go to a VAT registered garage for services

Would you agree that there would not be much point changing the water pump at such low mileage?

Re: Service and other costs
Well I went in and spoke to Renault Oldham today and they have a special on atm for timing belt changes, a whopping 30% off!
So included in the job they change the cambelt, accessory belt, all necessary pulleys/tensioners, the water pump and the coolant and all in they want £447 which by the sounds of other posts on this forum and others seems to be a very fair price.
What do you think

Re: Service and other costs
I was quoted £859.45 with my 30% off. but I was given a faxed breakdown by Claire on the Service dept.
I guess the £447 is just the timing belt/water pump and sundries.
MOT: £54, 1.2 hours of labour
Brake fluid: £68.46, 0.8 hours of labour
Air con service: £96.42, 0.9 hours of labour
Renault service 72k (they listed 126k for some reason but i corrected her on the phone): £191.85, 1.7 hours of labour
Renew timing belt inc water pump: £440.67, 4.1 hours of labour
Radiator cap: £8.05
Total labour hours: 8.7
Total cost: 859.45
The service will include their oil, but it's something like £50 off if i bring my own.

Re: Service and other costs
Hmmm so it looks spot on then really. The £447 was just the cambelt job yes, which included the extra belt, water pump and coolant. It is another £160 for the minor service it needs as well, but I suppose I could save abit more on that and choose my own oil.
I was looking at the Motul 8100 X-cess fully synthetic oil on Opie Oils. Does anybody use this?
Edit: Yes that is extortionate for a brake fluid change!

Re: Service and other costs
Ray,
I have used both John Delaneys and Riverside. I replaced my Megane after 18 months with a '55 Laguna Initiale about 14 months ago.
Riverside know their stuff but I haven't found them particularly cheap. They did some work under my aftermarket warranty and it was very expensive - I would have gone elsewhere for prices normally. Delaneys know Renaults less well but do seem to understand oils if you talk to them about it - the Laguna is FAP so I car even more than normal DCI owners do. My 63k service at Delaneys was very good value.
I am going elsewhere for my cambelt however, PM me if you want to know where.
Cheers
