Private Reg problem

Postby kevhardwick » Sun Jan 01, 2012 8:27 pm

Hi everyone - Happy New Year!

I want to treat myself to a private reg this year for my 1.9dci 130 05 plate megane - but the plate I want is currently registered to a car, a 1992 plate Fiat Uno that has been unlicensed (SORN) since 2003 (according to www.freecarcheck.org). Is there anyway I can either campaign the DVLA to realise the 92 Uno will be no longer roadworthy and sell me the plate or is there a way I can find the owner of the vehicle so I can buy it from them and then transfer the reg that way??

It will almost certainly be up to the owner of the donor vehicle to facilitate the action by putting the reg on a retention certificate and assigning the new number (which will be sent to them by DVLA) to their vehicle although whether or not they have to un-SORN their vehicle to do this I don't know. A call to your local DVLA office (better be quick as they are shutting a lot of them) would certainly be worthwhile to get confirmation on the next stage of action.

It gets worse i'm sure the donor car has to have MOT

A car has to be taxed to take the plate off it. Mine did anyway! And of course, to be taxed it must be insured... so much hassle, I ended up just letting the plate go with the car and bought another!
