If you have a Renault towbar there is a cycle attachment that you can get. Visit your local Renault dealer for the accessories brochure.

Hi, Newbie here,

Have some new roof bars to go on our Megane 3 door, what do you do with the little plastic flip-up flaps in the roof trim?????

Do they come off? can't see how the feet of the roof bars sit on the mounting point with these flaps in their vertical position.

Any advice greatfully recieved.

Cheers

Rear bike carrier

Postby oddcat » Wed Jul 08, 2009 12:58 pm

Am feeling quite depressed after reading all post so far. Desperate to fins some kind of rear carrier for 2 bikes. As a 5'5" single Mum with occasionally dodgy back I am not wanting a roof mounted bike rack. Absolutely love my car but not impressed with this situation. Any ideas?

have you tried getting some quick release levers for the bike wheels and fit them in the back that way?

Hiya

In the same situation as Oddcat above. I have two/three bikes (1 adult, 2 kids) that Ineed to take on hols with me in a couple of weeks. I would rather avoid the towbar route (too expensive) or the roof bars (too noisy, excess price on Eurotunnel, limited access to car parks, etc).

After scouring the internet for a rear mounted solution it would appear that there is none for a 2005 Megane hatchback!

All the posts above, although helpful, do not answer my query. :?

Is anyone currently using or know of a suitable read mounted cycle carrier? Please....? :-(

As posted on other related thread, I've ordered this:
http://www.micksgarage.co.uk/CarSpec.aspx?mode=drilldown&DeptID=304&Make=Renault&BaseModel=&Year=&Engine=&PetrolDiesel=&TypeID=&MODEL=Megane%20II%20%20(3/5%20Doors)%2011/2002%20Onwards

Will let you know if it fits or not as soon as I receive it!

Hopefully that will be the end of the search... ;-)

Would be awesome to find a bike carrier that actually fits this car!

I do like it's silly behind but it doesn't half complicate things!

I know it's a long time ago, but did you get one of these racks and if so, was it a success?

Hi All,

You can use roof bars with a sunroof but Thule advise not to use them with a panoramic roof however Renault do fit and sell them on the basis that you do not open the roof. Thule state that is due to the structure as opposed to the design of the lifting glass. From Halfords you are looking about£130ish for Thule roof bars and if they make their own about £100. DO NOT BUY VALUE BARS! Roof mounted cycle racks halfords advanced are on offer generally throughout sumer for £74 for two whilst the Thule one is £90 but for one. In regards to fitting the plastic tabs are hinged and just open so you leave them on and the bars fit around them.

There is no rear mounted cycle carrier that will fit a megane due to the shape of the back. The strap mount is closest but on majority you cannot locate secure enough chassis points for the hooks which is not around the exhaust.

The two options for carrying bikes are; Roof mounted or Tow Bar Mounted. If you have a tow bar already fitted then this is the easiest costing around £120 for three bikes and £170 for four bikes.

I hope it helped. PS for Thule part numbers visit their website with the application guides

Hi,
I have a 2004 megane 5dr hatchback with a panoramic sunroof. Halfords told me their roof bars would not fit because of the sunroof, so I went for the £120 option from Renault - the aluminium touring line roof bars. (Who, on a separate note, did not mention anything about not opening the roof when the bars are on!?) My problem is I now want to buy two cycle carriers, but both Halfords and Thule cannot say whether their Advanced or FreeRide cycle carriers will fit the shape of the touring line bars! Are they just saying that because they "only recommend you use their carriers with their bars", or am I really left with only the £95 per single carrier option that Renault say fit? (the Thule ProRide 80 bike rack). Does anyone have a different cycle carrier for 2 bikes that fits the Renault touring line bars?
Thanks,
Steph

Hi there,

I have a pair of genuine renault roof bars for my 5 door 2005 renault megane and I am struggling to find a cycle carrier that will accommodate the larger than normal (well compared to the skinny roof bars thule make) bars renault make.

Can anyone suggest a roof carrier that will fit on my renault roof bars?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi all, I know its' a long time since anyone posted on this thread, but just for info I've gone down the Thule roofbars and 591 bike carriers route - no sunroof to worry about! However, before I did, I used a standard Halfords 3 bike rear mount carrier with no problems - the top and side hooks I held onto the hatch and the bottom straps I put into the boot onto the cargo lashing hooks then closed the boot and tightened all the straps up - you can't open the boot (obvoiusly!) with this set up but it carried my bikes fine - and you can pick them up second hand on Ebay for £20 or so, so its' no great loss if you want to try it!
