Gear Knob

Postby Meggyman » Thu Jun 15, 2006 4:02 pm

Why is the Megane gear Knob so easily marked.
Have a fiesta too and it stands up to the rigours of daily life much better than the Smegane all round.

Renault state a new Knob is approx £40 for a replacement, and you can't just buy the easily marked top piece. You have to buy the whole knob.

Other than that I am so damn careful to the point where I hardly touch any part of the interior for the fear of marking or damaging anything.

thought you'd be able to get one under warranty... i think a few here have already.
You could try a scrap yard. The FAQ on this site has the instructions how to remove the gear knob.

My (late) 05 plate has faded badly, to the point that I can't read the gear numbers on the top of the knob.

I'll be asking for a replacement next month, when it's due a trip to the dealers for it's first service.

I ain't paying for a replacement, I can tell you that much!

Mine is slightly scratched and the numbers have slightly faded.

I am within the warranty period and I have enquired at 2 dealerships. The answer I got was the same (dealerships are 240km apart): 'Sir, you have sweaty hands and the top bit was not designed to withstand this kind of treatment'

Well I knew that beforehand! Both said that they will not replace the knob, as that would be 'normal wear and tear'. Phoned at Renault's centre office in Athens (just for the fun of it), and yes the answer was the same - normal wear and tear....

Mine is also badly scratched (this was done by the previous owner). I want to replace the knob too. The problem is: how do you remove the knob? Is there some secret trick...?

Thanks. You pull it straight up then, right? As far as I know, most other knobs are threaded...

Postby referee » Wed Jan 17, 2007 12:42 pm

I have had 2 replacement gear knobs both under waranty. Renault are aware of this problem but are failing to address it. My dealer has been onto them for seven months now and still they dont want to find a solution..

Gettin mine replaced on Friday under warranty along with bottom ball joint which failed on first MOT. Pays you to go to a dealer for your first MOT test, I was suprised it was covered but there you go!
Kind Regards
