broken turbo

just been informed that i need a new turbo on my 03 1.9dci, quoted £595 plus vat just to buy the turbo, and with fitting, oil, labour etc a bill of well over £900 is pending.

just wondered if i could source a turbo myself, how much would it be, and whats the best place to get one, maybe reconditioned.
