Oil filter for 1.9dci

Postby LeeUK » Fri Aug 13, 2010 7:11 pm

Having browsed the forum for different things I noticed on a thread this year mentioned using only OEM oil filters from the main dealer

I have just bought air and oil filters from Halfords

Surely they should be okay

People tried cut open the filters for comparison. The OEM filters are made by Purflux and have the largest area of the filtration material inside (update - the comparison site is gone now...). This is due to a patented pleating. They are also more robust to collapsing under pressure than some cheap brands, including those that are re-branded as Halfords.

I would not be taking a risk for the sake of saving £2. Then, it is a false economy, as you will have to replace it half way, i.e. 4.5k miles.

My choice is the OEM filter and Mobil 1 0w40. Never had problems with the engine.

Toosh,

You quoted the old P/N. See my "sticky" message above.

Hmm, you say cheap brands but Purflux are one of the cheapest in France, sold in most supermarkets!

Not bothered too much with the oil, regular changes with normal oil has served me fine with Scoobies and Mitsu's in the past

Cheers for replies

Jesus, you are seriously asking for trouble!

The dci engine likes a special brew and very regular changes of oil. It's not by chance that Renault halved the service intervals and then re-specified the oil requirements - they did it for a reason - not least because many turbos went south...

Best advice for Megane owners: sell it before it bankrupts you!

Why am I asking for trouble?
I was merely stating I wasnt going to buy mobil1 but as usual I would change the oil around every 6000miles as I do with any car of mine (with a turbo)
Renault changed the services I imagine after issues with those fitted with FAP (2005+ I think), I dont remember seeing any changes for those without

all that said I might get fully synthetic and change the oil every 9-10k

edit -
well i never!
recommended oil for this is fully synth

I would have thought regular changes with semi synth would be sufficient though
Had a 1.5dci for 2 years and about 50k miles and used semi synth
in fact, come to think of it, the garage (in France) gave me the remainder of a 2 litre bottle which was 10-40 Elf after a major service

Edit 2 -
going for a purflux filter and fully synth

never thought these would need fully synth oil

surely must be down to service intervals being too long
