Gear gaitor surround trim and knob problems

Right i hope somebody has an answer for me...... The oval shaped trim around the base of the gaitor has broken, the clips are broke so it flaps around and is quite annoying. No probs, i've ordered one from renault with a new gaitor. However the problem is the knob is quite worn, which seems to be a common problem on these. I know you can get the inserts from a chap in france, which would be ideal. But obviously i will have to remove the knob to swap the gaitor, will it break is the question???? With it being my girlfriends mums car i dont really want to leave her knobless!! And renault want 80 quid for a replacement knob. Anyone had a similar problem?
Its an 04 cab, with reverse on the right. Not sure if its lift up reverse or not??
