Rear Brake Discs and Bearings

Postby jimbo1982 » Sat Jun 14, 2008 1:18 pm

Hi,

I have a Megane 1.6 Dynamique 2004 and was told at the garage today that I needed new rear discs (and pads) this is not a problem but I was told that the bearings HAD to be changed as well because of how Renault designed the car/brakes. Is this the case? It was a well known garage and I have not had trouble there before but when I asked a friend of mine who does a lot of his own car maintainence he said he had never heard of a car where the discs and bearings had to be changed together. Also when I look online you can buy the discs and bearings seperatly and there is no mention of having to buy them together.

All help is much appreciated.

James

At my most recent service I had discs and pads replaced front and rear on my '05 1.9dCi Coupe Cabriolet and there was no mention of bearings needing to be or being done.

EBC makes cheap discs (D1298 -- £45 a pair) without bearings -- so, you just use the the bearings and the ABS rings from the old discs. OEM dicss are 3 times more expensive as they always come with bearings and rings.
