selfmade tinted rear windows

Postby terry_mccann » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:02 pm

well, yesterday and today I have tried tinting my rear windows and I must say, I am quite satisfied with the result:

The secret really is to use the hot air gun (is that the name? high power hairdryer, if you get my drift ;-) long enough to form the tinting foil to the shape of the tourers rear window....took me 90 minutes alone..... you can still see the dotted surroundings of the rear window but I am sure those will disappear....they also did on the rear side windows which I made some time ago....

what do you think? ok for the third try in all, isn't it? the first two attempts went horribly wrong which made me use the cheapest foil I could find ( 9 euros)

That looks really good!

Did you cut the rear shape into strips at all? Or did you do it all in one go. I didnt ever think about using a hot air gun/ hairdryer on the film to shape it.. very very good idea. Is that what the pros use?

yes, I think the pros also do it that way....

we kept it in one peace, which is the charm of it, would be much easier to cut it into stripes but would look much worse then....but it really took ages do "hairdry" the foil into shape.....but you have to use an industrial hot air gun, no actual hairdryer, as these are by far not hot enough....

If you use a hot air gun, isnt there a risk of burning the car? do you use a heat shield at all?

There's not a lot of point in me thinking about tints on my current car. It already has legal limit tints, and it has no windows with the roof down anyway!

However.. I'm sure at some point in the future I will have a hatchback, so this info will come in very handy!

yes, this risk is obviously there, you have to be careful with it....but not a real problem, if you do it in short turns and frequently pull back the hot air gun you are ok. and of course you have to take care that the glass doesnt crack....

we have no legal limits here for tintings, you only must not use the foil on the passenger and front window, but arears you can go as dark as you like.
