R26 keeps amazing

Postby jaybyme » Wed Oct 24, 2007 7:45 am

Hi ,
had my R26 a good few months now, and it amazes me still all the time.
On the Autobahns here in Germany you can really use the power with great acceleration between 120-220 kmh, which surprises even the porsche drivers. The older 993 and 996's, boxers and caymens can't stay with the little upstart from France. Which is very stisfying as you leave someone who has just payed 60,000 plus for his car.
The handling is superb,to dangerous to take it to the limits on public roads.
And the the fuel economy is brilliant for such a car.
I'm averaging about 28mpg in a normal week with town driving, and some fast autobahn driving. Worst I had was about 20mpg,but that was with 200miles very fast Sunday autobahn racing included.
I'm definetly going to to some tuning later.Air intake, Exhaust and ECU.
Then with about 275bhp and a lot more torque,it should be awsome.
Only downside with the car, is the build quality.very cheap palstics and lots of creaking and moaning from panels in the car.The plastic gear gator ring, has broken its holding clamps,as the gator is to tight when going into reverse.
But at least Renault have spent the money where it counts, after all it is the best hot hatch not a comfortable cruiser like the Golf.
happy driving
Jay

wheels

Postby jaybyme » Sun Jan 06, 2008 4:02 pm

Hi,
wheels are 8Jx18 with 235-40-18's
in actual fact I've been trying to get a set of 17" for the winter, but no dealer can get them.
Just done another trip to England for Christmas.
Car was great as normal, even got rid of an annoying creaking that was driving me mad.
Done 900 miles and averaged just over 70mph, including the ferries, two shoping trips in Canterbury.
Not too bad ? with a fuel cunsumption of 27mpg.
Would have been better, but got bored as I neared home and drove at 140mph+ for quite a while.

Fuel economy

Postby jaybyme » Mon Feb 11, 2008 5:48 pm

I'm finding that if i want to drive economically, I can stay under 2000rpm.
The engine has so much torque, you can quiet easily be in fifth at 30mph in sixth at 40-45 mph and 2000rpm is about 56mph.
I know if I wanted to be really boring, over a longer run, high 30's would be possible.
But can't say I brought the car to drive slowly lol

I too have an R26 and the more I drive it the more it amazes me too .. yes it is quick in a straight line but its the handling that really does it for me especially in the wet ..it just grips and grips with almost non existant understeer.. that LSD does a brilliant job and it sounds so well too especially between 2-3000 revs.

update, haven't been on here for a long time.
Cars even better now, have all the mods on it that I wanted.
Rstuning remap with remote box
Forge IC
ITG air filter.
When I brought the car I had it it mind straight away to get it tuned to bring it up to S3/130i power levels.
The cars brilliant now and would highly recommend it to everyone.
In 1 year of ownership the car has been into the work shop 3 times.
At 3000km for an oil change and replacement of the gear gator, as the plastic ring at the bottom had broken(warrenty)
A few months later for a new windscreen, cracked by a low flying boulder ;)
Then once more to replace the faulty door locks which is very common on Renaults for causing loads of strange creaking, sounds like it's coming from the rear panals/roof etc.
Done 17000km and very happy with the car, :D
p.s It's also nice to annoy some ,Bm,Audi,Porsche drivers on the Autobahns
