SR Tuning Re-map: Experiments and results

Postby davelowe » Wed Mar 23, 2011 10:22 pm

Experiment to determine the effects of an engine re-map (1.5dci 106 BHP)

Abstract

Three tests are undertaken. Test one is designed to measure the effect on fuel economy. Test two is designed to measure the effect on acceleration. Test three is a performance top speed on a given high gradient road. The re-map was undertaken by SR Tuning (an affiliate of Evolution Chips). Both fuel saving and performance issues are addressed.

Stated figures from the Evolution Chips website show that the increase in BHP are from 106 to 131 BHP and from 240 to 290 Nm.

Limitations

As noted below, test one is of relatively short duration in terms of mileage. Speeds higher than 50mph are not considered. Test two is limited in scope and accuracy. Ideally a 0 – 62 mph test should have been performed. In both tests two and three, the re-mapped runs had to be aborted. See text below for discussion.

Set up

Test one: the car is driven over a distance of 16.0 miles comprising a round trip journey between two same set points. The trip comprises approximately 1/3rd 30mph zones, 1/3rd 40mph zones and 1/3rd 50mph zones without stopping. The locality prohibits testing at faster speeds. Before each run the car is warmed up to operating temperature, is fully fuelled (60 litres) from the same source and has the climate control set to automatic for 18C. Only the driver is present in the vehicle and the cruise control function is used to control the relevant speeds unless noted. All tyres are inflated to the manual specification. The external temperature is between 3C and 5C. The terrain is nominally flat.

The engine RPM in test one varies between 1000RPM to 3000RPM except for setting off from stationary. The measurement is overall MPG.

In test two the engine RPM varies from 850 RPM to 4500 RPM. This test is from a rolling start (throttle at idle in 1st gear) to reduce excessive wear to the clutch. The measurement is the top speed achieved between two fixed points.

Test three was a maximum speed test on a given high gradient road. The measurement is the top speed achievable overall.

Results

Test one: before the re-map, the average fuel consumption was 64.9MPG. There was one unscheduled overtaking manoeuvre requiring full throttle acceleration in order to normalise the speed limitations.

Test one: after the re-map, the average fuel consumption was 70.3MPG. There was one deliberate overtaking manoeuvre to attain consistency with the first run.

Test two: before the re-map, the top speed achieved was 50mph (-5+0) at the second fixed point.

Test two: after the re-map, the test had to be aborted owing to braking distances. The top speed achieved was 80+ mph well in advance of the second fixed point.

Test three: before the re-map, top speed was 45mph (+5-0)

Test three: after the re-map, the test had to be aborted owing to the length of the road. Before abortion, the top speed attained was 70mph (+0,-5) and rising.

Conclusions:

The re-map by SR Tuning achieved the following:

A decrease in fuel consumption of 5.4MPG (8.3%)
An increase in acceleration between fixed points (60%+)
An increase in top speed under full throttle acceleration under hard load (55%+)

Discussion:

The effect of the re-map cannot be adequately described in words. Acceleration from 1700 rpm to 2000 rpm is highly marked. Acceleration from 2000 until limited rpm is insane in any gear including 6th (but especially in gears 1st - 4th). You will gain performance and achieve better fuel economy. ‘Steve’ of SR Tuning is extremely knowledgeable, easy to get along with (couldn’t stop him chatting (!)), efficient, and offers a negotiable discount on the advertised prices. The entire process took less than 90 minutes. This experiment was not sponsored.

Recommendations:

If you have a turbo-diesel Megane, have it re-mapped by SR Tuning (or any affiliate of Evolution Chips).

How much did it cost, sounds well worth doing!

I am so tempted. So what is the new 0 - 62 time?

I got a discount - I don't recall the exact figure but it was around £180. Must admit I haven't done a 0 - 60 - a serious omission! The problem is finding a suitable road around here.
