I'm just back from a trip to my folks in my 1.9DCi Coupe Cabriolet.
I live in Lancing, West Sussex and they live in Dursley, Gloucestershire. I used to go there via A27 > M27 > M3 > A34 > M4 > A46. A pretty frustrating, dull route in my opinion.
So, I mapped myself a new route which doesn't include any motorway at all. Just 144.2 miles of mostly twisting, undulating, single carriage-way A and B roads.
It takes in some rather pretty little towns and villages such as Devizes, Midhurst, Petworth and Storrington as well as a good long stretch of Salisbury Plain... including those wonderful "Tank Crossings" on MOD land. I always want to see a tank but haven't done so yet... I can't help but wonder exactly how little damage my CC would inflict on a Sherman Tank if I hit it broadside at 80 MPH.
Anyhoo, for my troubles, I get a fantastic driving experience. Here's how the figures work out.
Distance = 144.2 Miles
Ave Speed = 45.0 MPH
Fuel Used = 3.3 Gallons
Mileage = 43.1 MPG
Time = 3h 15m

Re: Sussex to Gloucestershire, The Pretty Route
That was always my second favorite driving challenge. Find the road less taken.
My favorite was drive til yer lost then map your way home.
