Rear window regulator cables

Postby bennybullfrog » Thu Jun 23, 2011 8:24 pm

I need help, has anybody tried to change the cables in the rear window regulator in a 2004 megane cc ?
cant get a new regulator from renault uk , none in the country, has to come from france , that will take 5 days , and im off to cornwall in 4 days , so i have purchased a cable repair kit, i looks pretty straight forward, but it is not, cant seem to the right position on the reg wheel so both cables reach the lifters ,

Not done this job on a Meg done it on an Escort many years ago and a good few tantrums doing it, took my cables out of mine on my 04 CC and bolted window in place through the riser slots.
This system seems to work like a push me, pull you! one cable winds onto the wheel whilst the other winds off and visa versa at a guess I would thin kit is all about getting the wheel in the right place inside the motor I supose if it was me I would look at setting it with one cable long and one short, this should then corispond to the window being either right up or right down, I am sure as well one cable is shorter than the other (i Think) if all else fails though bolt it up like I have put the head back on the motor and refit, plug it in and go to Cornwall, all that happens is that rear window does not go down, roof still works as it thinks the glass has gone down! mine has been like this for 12 months now! makes it safe, scure and dry only time anyone would notice is when roof goes up n down!

FORGOT to say, if you follow the bolt it up route then make sure you take your cables back off it, reasemble the motor without them , put the regulator back in and plug it in, don't forget to adjust the glass via the 3x10mm bolts that holds the glass in place for a perfect fit with the roof and door seals (you should do this anyway once new cables or reg is installed) as the glass may be to high which casued the distruction of my 1st replacement regulator, to much strian on the lifter cables!
to do this remove th e3 large prubber gromets on the quater panel, close roof and door (window up), use a hleper (the wife) to hold glass, and postition it so it fits snuggly with the roof seal and also the doorseal you only need to slacken these nuts of just enough to enable you to move the window a bit, retighten when in place but DO NOT over tighten them or you may well crack the quarter lite glass so just enough so that it does not move, possibly a torque wrench setting somewhere but I could never find it so just tight enough so the glass does not move.
to bolt it up I think I used 16mm nuts n bolts you can see in front of you how the glass works on the slots, just push it to the top insert the bolts through the slots and wind on the nut, they are there simply to stop the glass from falling (being pushed) downwards, again beware of tightness for you as you may bend the runners, for me not a problem as I have a regulator from an 07 to go in one day. :D

Chrism this might seem like a bit of a dim question but is your window fixed in the up position and no longer working? If so do you still put the roof down? I've had both my back regs disconnected to stop the windows from getting stuck in the down position (long story), been too scared to put roof down in case the glass smashes when I put it back up. Just wondering if anyone else has tried it?
