Fitting a towbar to cc

Postby Rugbyboy69 » Thu Sep 23, 2010 8:08 pm

Have just fitted a towbar to my 2005 CC!
Here are some of my findings so should you want to do it
It won't take you 4 hours like it just took me!
Instructions are generic and not specific to the CC!

I had read fitting instructions online for several manufactors
and shouldn't be a big job, and needn't be.
Firstly bumper and lights need to be removed.
This is easy and a pleasure to do. Impact beam is removed
and discharged, again not a problem.
Now the bit they don't tell you!
There are two cast iron counterweights that the beam is attached
too! These are on steel brackets. These need to be removed so towbar
can slide into the rear cross member legs. This leaves two cast iron
lumps flapping about in the breeze. Some
manufactors supply a short strap to replace the brackets.
I personally don't think this is adequate but
mine didn't come with them!
I cut the brackets with an angle grinder so that
two of the original fixing points and spacers
remained.
Everything else was fine with the exeption
of attaching the near side rear securing bolt!
Instructions say remove air vent in the rear wing.
What you need to do is move the roof pump/ motor.
This is not a problem. Two bolts
move out of the way and fit bolt. Easy,
but they don't tell you that.
Everything else was a doodle! And didn't
need to cut bumper!
Hope this is of some use to someone.
Please ask if you have anymore questions.

I had a towbar fitted professionally and they had all the problems you described!

They didn't secure the counterweights first time and had to strip the car down a second time.

I'm impressed you did it yourself!
