Megane cc 04 cam belt water pump advice

Hi all

Newbie here, i have a megane cc 2004 1.9dci its done 48000 miles i have booked it in to have its cambelt change done and was wondering about the water pump. i asked renault and they said they inspect the pump and if its not leaking the leave it alone. it will cost an extra £120 to have this changed. Should i have this done.

I'd get a quote from a non-Renault diesel specialist. The water pump costs £30. The rest is labour (if I remember correctly, it simply unbolts). The problem is you have to drain the coolant first which means removing the undertray and bumper to get to the radiator bottom hose. This can be done in 30 minutes. When the new pump is fitted, you put the coolant back, or make up a new batch for about £20.

I don't know how much you have been quoted by Renault for the belt change, but an independent will (probably) be cheaper. You have to get a specialist because setting the belt tension is done with a frequency measuring tool. A back street garage will not be able to set it correctly.

It's probably worth getting the pump changed, as if it fails, you have to do the belt job again (costly).
