Roof cylinder hydraulic leak, worst position!!!

Postby Nomad09 » Sun Mar 07, 2010 11:42 am

Hi Forumites,
My wife owns a 2004 Megane Cabrio Expression, the roof recently stopped working, I found the hydraulic oil level low in the hydraulic oil cylinder. I topped this up with hydraulic oil and the roof worked perfectly, after a couple of "movements" the oil level had again dropped a bit so I went looking for a leak, wasn't hard to find by the drip under the vehicle on the passengers side behind the door B pillar. I opened the flap at the back as part of the opening process then stopped opening any further when the lid was fully open and the rear window had moved into the "pack away position" I then started looking for the leak. Oil appears to be dripping from the bottom tube connection to the cylinder on the near side cylinder, you couldn't of wished for a worse place. Looks to be quite a challenge to get this cylinder out to fix the leak.
So a couple of questions, does the tube have an o-ring seal or something like that that can be easily replaced? I'm going to assume that the cylinder has to come out to effect a repair. Do I have to buy a set of three pipes to make an effective repair? When I phoned the local Renault agent this was the offer I got, seems like a lot of expense to go to to replace a simple maybe o-ring. The guy didn't seem particularly familiar with the Cabriolet, he was looking in the manual trying to find out if there was a seal or not he didn't actually know which I always find a concern especially when they deal with these vehicles as their core business.
If someone has a procedure or a picture step by step that would be great.

So any divine revelations would be gratefully accepted, I used a 32 weight hydraulic oil I'll assume that's OK.

Yours Marty
All the very Best

technicians are fairly broad in knowledge since all cars have engines, suspension, etc... which work pretty much the same in any vehicle.
with regard to the roof mechanics and workings of it... Renault have a specialist team solely for the roof. with it's complexity, i'm not surprised they don't know the answer.
