Okay so I picked up my car after having some rubbish Clio hire car for 3 days, I was able to speak to the technician at the Renault dealers that worked on it too, both my rear regulators and inhibitors had been changed along with the switch, they water tested it afterwards to make sure the water was running from the membrane away from the regulators but said they were wet windows so were designed to put up with water, I said people had wrapped clingfilm around the control boxes (where the wires feed through) inside the rear windows and he said he couldn't do that but tucked it further inwards so that it was harder for water to get to. I asked whether it was true or not that there were two control units for the windows, 1 to control individual windows and the other that controls them all up and down at once (linked to the roof), he said there was only one, and the failure at times due to water stopping all my windows going up/and or down was a knock on effect of water damage to the rear wires creating false readings. My car is on an 04 plate so the 7 year part contribution scheme ends for me in November this year but fortunately as they fitted new regulators etc, they carry a new 12 month warranty on those parts. I said afterwards that a lot of people have found it was just the failure of the small control box instead of the whole regulator and they said that's true, however they as a main dealer cannot get hold of that part individually without the whole regulator which is why they change the whole thing, but this could have been sorted also by buying the individual unit off ebay for about £5 or so.

Fortunately I didn't have to pay for any of this though and used potential legal action before they backed down. I bought the car back in February where one of the windows had failed already even though it was on an 04 plate, my statutory rights protected me on this occassion, so I would pass on this to everyone else that even if you buy a used car, if it's not fit for purpose, the seller whom you have a contract with is responsible. They might argue that such condition is down to wear and tear, however as Renault brought out this part contribution scheme, it's not just wear and tear it's almost an admission of a design fault if everyone suffers this common problem!

Glad to hear you got it sorted OK.

My take on the controller issue is that everyone thinks water entering the door and splashing on the electrics is the sole cause of the problem and i'm sure in many cases that is true but I personally think the problem is twofold.
Due to the position of the door drain holes a little water remains at the very bottom of the door, something I noticed recently when I removed my door card, and that will evaporate creating a damp environment inside the door which is also bad news for the electrics.
To try and combat the latter problem I'm trying to seal my regulator units by wrapping self amalgamating tape around the controllers, connectors and cables all in one continuous wrap.
Have already done the 2 doors but still got the rears to do, don't know for sure if it will work only time will tell.
