No heater or Blower....wrong time of year

Postby Oscar-pepper » Sun Nov 28, 2010 7:48 pm

Hi all,

I have just joined the site today, didn't realise it existed, but have spent the last couple of hours, reading through past comments, and amazingly have been reminded of how much my dream car has really cost me over the past 3 years, anyway not hear to moan!! Wanted to firstly say hi.....Hi!! and secondly ask a bit of advise......yesterday i did a 350 mile, round trip in my 05 1.6 megane Dynamique CC, as normal ran like a dream, apart from the whistling from the windows when i went over 60mph....... Anyway, got up this morning, to take it to be cleaned so she was clean for work on monday, as usual, she started straight away, as normal, but when i put the heater on to 2, and 3/4 heat temp, nothing came out of the blower, tried it on 3, and still nothing, rear demisters worked, but had no blower to demist the front windscreen, left her running for a bit, to see if she warmed up and that the problem was the blower fuse. Ten minutes later still no heat or blower. Have been to Halfords, and had the fuse changed, still nothing, rang Kwik-Fit,(who are open on sundays), but they don't have an electrics guy in on Sundays, (just a guy on reception, who tells you what they can't fix today.................)
Anyway, i was wondering if anyone knows what the problem could be here, been told it could be:
a) the switch
b) the motor
c) wires worked loose
d) run out of anti-freeze (it is just below the max line)

Please help...........it is being looked at tomorrow afternoon, but don't want to be robbed,

thanks in advance

potentially it could be loose ires/plug in the back... i think that sometimes happens, if they say that u need a new blower etc just get them to connect it to 12v to show you its not working, or take it somewhere trustworthy!lol

The switch failing a) is not one I've heard of before. I would discount d) entirely (except to top it up with suitable fluid). So I would concentrate as mentioned on the motor, the wiring harness, and the resistor pack.

First check ALL the fuses. They are legion on the Megane, in unpredictable places and often lead to red-herrings. Check the cabin air filter isn't blocked - this can cause the motor to fail. It is located on my car in the driver's side foot well. Remove a small piece of trim next to the clutch pedal. Remove the filter and hoover out any debris. If this hasn't been done before, you will have half a tree's worth of leaves to dispose of. Access (again my car) to the motor/resistor pack is via trim on the passenger side. The glove box may have to be removed, but this is done simply by undoing several Torx screws (some are hidden - have a good look around). The motor unit can be tested as mentioned by a length of wire and a car battery or similar. If the motor and resistors are good, you will have to look at the wiring and switch.

That would be my angle of attack to the problem anyhow.

HI,

Thought i'd up date you on todays events:

Long story short, went to a few garages before i was due at my normal garage, just to see if i could find out the sort of price i may have to pay: was told a variety of things were the problem, from motor, switch, loose wire, run out of anti freeze(causing things to freeze!!), and was going to take anything from 2 days up to 5, cost was going to £180 plus.

Anyway, went to my usual garage, within half an hour had the diagnosis, resistor needs replacing and some wires burnt out.......will be ready by 10am ish tomorrow morning, at the cost of under £100.

And some garages wonder why they haven't got as much business as they used to, feel sorry for the people who take the word of the first garage and don't shop around or get another opinion.

Thanks for the info on my post, really appreciated.

Glad you got it sorted! I would advise that you change the cabin air filter if it has not been done recently. Poor airflow can lead to overheating the motor and associated parts.
