Scary noises

Postby mitachu » Tue Mar 22, 2016 11:56 am

My CC has started making what can only be described as a "scary noise" when turning, braking or pulling off. The noise sounds metallic, and is a combination of cracking, ticking or crunching.

The car passed its MOT in January without a problem. I took it back to the chap that serviced it (who we trust) and demonstrated the problem which (typically) wasn't too bad at the time. It only occurred when reversing on a full lock and was a quiet tapping noise. He said that it could be a number of things as - let's face it - the car is ten years old this year and the previous owner did not look after it very well. I was told to keep it for a bit longer until the problem got worse and then go back. Well, it's got worse. The car has always felt a little bumpy/trembly when being driven, so perhaps this is related?

Suggestions:

1. Brakes - I don't think it's the brakes as it happens when I'm not even braking
2. CV joint - "My man" said that it didn't sound like a CV joint when I took is last time, and it didn't exhibit the symptoms, plus he checked them all during the MOT
3. Suspension - It could be a cracked spring. Looking under the arches, the springs look corroded. Plus, as the problem seems occur when the weight of the car shifts (ie: during brakng or even slight acceleration) maybe this is the most likely culprit
4. Engine mounting - I don't think it this, as I parked up last night and popped the bonnet and revved the engine. Engine doesn't knock, etc.

Anyone come across this problem before? Any ideas what it might be? I'm going to take it back to the chap tomorrow hopefully and get it looked at soon but if anyone here could give me some pointers to pass on, that'd be awesome.

HELP!

Ta.

Thanks for the reply mate.

I parked it up last night and did a full lock left to right but couldn't hear anything. But "creaking/grating" is a good description of the noise that I have.

I'm going to get it looked at by my man again. He did mention strut tops.

My passenger side went never heard much the odd creak more noticable pulling out of aldi as there is a small upward ram before a good left hand lock to get onto main road where you clearly hear crak and grate mmmmm me thinks what's that?
1 week later BANG spring gone and cc springs are a pain in the ass to do as they have a massive amount of pre compression which is why they make such a bang when they go and once broke a real swine to get out... oh the joy of meg!
