New here.. Buying advice

Postby copthis1 » Wed Jun 13, 2012 11:43 am

Hi.

I have been looking at the following (Advert copied from Autotrader)

2005, 1.6 VVT Dynamique. 2 Door Convertible, Gold,( Quartz), Petrol, Manual, Immobiliser,One owner from new, All bills.MOT 2/13, Tax 8/12,New timming belt at 37k Excellent condition, (near perfect paint and alloys) Immobiliser,Steering wheel reach adjustment,Remote central locking, Height adjustable drivers seat,Rear electric windows, CD/Radio, Low milage. Great summer car!. £3,450

Now for the silly questions:

Any opinions on this vehicle.
Generally are the roofs water tight.
Overall, for this price etc is this the best balance of cost/car you get for the money.

I am buying it for the wife to do no more than 10000 per year in and I do love the look, but I don't want to buy into trouble (Who does?)

All comments appreciated :-)

Water Tight!!! you have to be joking, Renault can not even get a Clio sunroof not to leak, when the Meg 2 CC was launched they told the sales staff the roff was "shower proof" when they Renault chap was pinned down by our sales chap it comes to light the car was desgined to be garaged s oany heavy rain would not affect it, generally they leak a little, my main issues seem to be the supid window seals the both front and rear side windows rub on to seal so my raer quarter lights both drip, so mostly you will get drips, best place to check any major leaks is push the front seats forward and feel under the seat there is a carpect slit under there get your hand in and feel the undlerlay, as this is where most of your major water leak water will gather, they can dry carpets with a vax and heater but it takes ages to dry sponge underlay .

For me I found the 1.6 a little underpowered you have to drive it, the one I tried didn't seem to please on hill accelration unless you where high up in the revs it also was not to pleased passing other cars unless you wound it up first to do so, don't get me wrong it was ok but not really what I was happy driving, i felt you had to work it a little to hard to get some pleasure, which at present means it will suck fuel, was also not to impressed about it road tax band bit expensive for a 1.6, but at 3.5 grand not a bad buy at all make sure you have paper work for that belt change, they also suffer delphaser pully problems which makes for bad running, there is loads on here about that make sure roof opens and shuts ok should be smooth and fairly quick, check all windows open from the center consul AND the driver door switch, have a look at the rear tyres as these cars suffer toe issues on the rears so they eat away at either inner or outer tread, they can not be altered, both key cards? don't listen to the gut if he says you can buy an spare off ebay it wont work, you have to get your spare from Renault at around £100 or more they are deep coded to YOUR vehicle chassis number so are not transferable EVER! just make sure you are happy with the operation of the roof most things on these cars are easily reapairable apart from the roof that can be expensive, Oh also have a look at the hand brake leaver does the button work ok is the handle loose as this is another weak area easy to fix just a bit if a bind to do also finally with water leaks again lift up the boot mat and put your hand around or even under the tool tray it should be dry this is another water hot spot, sorry this post is a bit up and down I am writing them as they pop into my head, Drive it find some good hills see what you think as said I was not happy with it as it did not suit my driving style so I bought a 1.9DCi cheaper tax £125 and more pull but it is a fun car for the summer and there are lots of 1.6's out there that people do like but it is a heavy car with all that glass above you much better when its in the boot!
Have fun in it!
