Hydraulic squeal

Hello. this is my first post. My problem is a squealing and groaning racket from the hydraulic system when lowering and raising the roof on my 2007 Megane cabrio. I even have to give the roof a helping hand to start it off but it continues unaided its self the rest of the way in both directions. Could it be low or starved of hydraulic oil? Can i check the level myself? Am I damaging it by operating it? Any suggestions please!
