airbag

Postby ziik » Fri Oct 14, 2011 4:57 pm

hi im am very puzzled and need advise asap

my megane cc 2006 drives spot on, just yesterday i was driving and came to a roundabout ( stereo was off) and as i turned for the 4th exit i heard a noise from my steering , when i pulled up at home i looked behind the steering wheel and the airbag ribbon looks like its coming loose!!!

question is

1) what is the reason this has happened .

2) i have gone paranoid thinking air bag will deploy in my face whilst driving and have not drove because of this .

3) can this affect my steering column remote as i can seem to get it to work with my pioneer dvd head unit and i have had three patch kits on.

please advise

thank you

I had a problem with the air bag light when I bought mine but didn't have any clicking from the steering, I noticed it at the first viewing and the garage said they would sort it. Turned out to be the clockspring which is an electrical ribbon cable that winds in and out as the steering wheel turns.

There is no loose connection , I have checked the connectors but when I look behind the steering wheel I see a white like ribbon tape it's like it's rubbing on the steering inside if that makes sense

It's almost certainly the clockspring so you need to replace the steering module switch unit, that's the bit the indicator, radio control and wiper stalks are attached to. I don't know if you have to fit your own stalks or if it comes complete, I suspect it's a complete unit and I think I read somewhere it costs around £120 to £150 depending on your models specification.
I don't know how to attach pictures but if you drop me your email address I will send you a picture of one.

When u hear that sound that does indeed mean that the slip ring (steering ring ) ribbon cable is about to go . i Have owned a few meganes and have learned all about this ,
So what i did on my megane was when i heard the sound i went home removed the steering wheel and the cover then took the whole unit out. You have 3 plugs to disconnect if i remember correctly. Then u can open the whole unit up and re wrap the wire again nicely. Note you must put it back wrapped in the position it came off because you can break it by over turning the ring.

good luck!
