Diesel vs Petrol

Postby wanda » Mon Dec 01, 2008 3:06 pm

Why is the 2.0CVT 140 bhp slower than the 1.9dci 130 bhp? Well according to the brochure.

Maybe its finally time for the diesel engines to be faster than the equivalent petrol engine.

CVT Constantly Variable Transmition (or something close) is the system tha DAF used 30 years ago
Ford tried it in the Feista a few back
its two cones and some rubber bands
didn't work then doubt it will now

Isnt it basically a clutchless manual (semi auto)??? if so whats the point?? u either have a manual or an auto   citroen did it to there C2 VTR when they first come out. The old 607 i used to have had a auto box but with the manual opiton (knock the leaver over from "D" and u then have up and down movments to change gear) it was a waste of time, only think it was gud for was holding it in the req gear longer  i just left it in auto all the time

U would think a petrol would be faster if they both had the same gear box etc... as petrols you have more rev range so less gear changes to hit required speed, but midrange sprint the diesel will kick ass, as you just plant the loud pedel with out changing gear as power is low down and gud old torque kicks in, where as the petrol you need to drop a few coggs to get the revs up and go.

There are 4 types of transmission that I know of:
  • Manual, where the driver depresses the clutch and moves the gear stick
  • Automatic, where a torque converter somehow knows when to change up/down and can be told to hold a gear (I don't know much about them)
  • Semi-Automatic, a sequential gearbox where a computer controls the clutch and gearchange. Manual override available.
  • CVT, Continuously Variable Transmission. Proper ones only have forward and reverse, others introduce gears to make them seem more like a normal automatic. Rather than meshing gears they normally use a belt.

CVT isn't the same as a Semi-Automatic, even although they function similarly to the end user. That's down to the computer making a modern CVT mimic a Semi-Automatic.

A cvt is like a previous post said.

It has two pairs of cones, with a gap in the middle, with a belt running between them. The cones then get closer together or further apart to change the ratio of the drive, ie constantly variable.

i think the power delivery is meant to be shocking, the car seems to build the rev but not really go anywhere as the gearbox tries to keep up.

Its def the reson why the petrol is slower. Noting else :idea

CVT is what Toyota have been using for years on their Prius....I think it's a good option for a low powered car (the Prius is like 76bhp), but for bigger/more powerful engines, I have my doubts how effective it can be...

yeah, the prius was ragged and the m3 just had to keep up.
so the m3 was basically at walking pace and cruising.

its a shame its not relistic.
my 1.9dci can do over 60mpg on long runs but on week of driving to work i average 28mpg :(

the technology in a prius is a step in the right direction as they get more mpg in the city. i just want them to make a diesel hybrid that's good looking.

im thinking the new meg III coupe with a diesel hybrid!
