The advantage of a hybrid is exactly that... CITY DRIVING. The engine (a 1.5L petrol) is a very dirty engine.

Citroen should be making a diesel hybrid next year or in 2010.... we'll wait and see..... would love to have a Meg hybrid tho too!!

Maybe its finally time for the diesel engines to be faster than the equivalent petrol engine.

other than hp, dont forget the torque..
usually deisels are torquier than the petrol equivalent, and more grunt at lower rev..
and it shows during launch acceleration..

so the m3 was basically at walking pace and cruising.

its a shame its not relistic.
my 1.9dci can do over 60mpg on long runs but on week of driving to work i average 28mpg :(

the technology in a prius is a step in the right direction as they get more mpg in the city. i just want them to make a diesel hybrid that's good looking.

im thinking the new meg III coupe with a diesel hybrid!

I dont understand, I get above 45mpg doing town driving in my diesel and you say you get 28..... do you have a heavy right foot or is the difference between 1.9dci and 1.5dci that great?

I am a bit confused....

partly both.
im sure theirs a fair difference but right foot like a slab of concrete id say!
joking aside
i think i could probably improve it a considerable amount by just turning the engine off at the lights, i would say 10mins of the 30min journey im getting 0mpg cos im not moving! At no point in my journey do i go above 4th (mostly 2nd) so that doesn't help. Also the AC is always on (i think) with climate control so that wont be alot but it'll affect it, and again I've got a K & N box filter in so it wont affect it alot but im sure it will a bit.

My driving style has definitely changed since driving the route to try and get more mpg but i cant seem to get any more out of it when driving in them conditions. ie traffic lights, low gears, and the rest.

Don't forget the Diesel is also turbo charged whereas the Petrol model you quoted isn't so we're not really comparing apples and apples here. I think if you had an equivolent Petrol engine that had a normal gearbox and was also Turbocharged it would kick the Diesel to the curb. Even without Turbo it should still to better with manual gearbox everything else being equal. I think Petrols will always be quicker off the mark than Diesel, but Diesels are good mid-range and outperform Petrol there as well as going up hills thanks to having more torque. Another reason Petrol cars go a lot slower up hill is because we have to turn on our AC and recirculation so that we don't get a load of the dirty diesel fumes inside our cars.

Cheers,

John

say no to the cvt if the major manufactures (thats if there are any left, recession anyone) ditched the idea then what makes anyone think I will go for that interesting transmission system.

As for the prius, they are an awful gimmick that return less MPG then my motor, and make you look like a Pious W*&^$%£ (see what I did there),

no seriously they should officially rename them the Toyota Pious and see how many self rightous I'm saving the planet and I used to drive a citroen C2 when they were made out of wriggley tin, only eat oraganic (all food that grows is organic you fools)lentil eating, joss stick burning, non aerosol using (but they have air con and fridges) idiots buy them and drive around looking down their noses at you in your 1.5dci, 60mpg, £35 a year to tax renault. (£35 tax thats why I bought it hands of my wallet Brown)

A quick question. If you had two cars (i.e 2 meganes), one diesel and another petrol

1. If they had the same power the diesel would the diesel have a faster 0-62 time? Taking into account that with diesels you have to change gears much sooner than petrol

2. If the Petrol had a little bit more power but less torque. 1.6 111bhp vs 1.5dci 106bhp for example. From the lights would the petrol be faster? And is it only because of the gear ratio?

You have to take into account the weight of each, ie the power to weight ratio.

The problem with the prius is that the hybrid drive chain and batteries only have a life span of around 100k miles.

What Toyota didn't say to the eco fans, is that the batteries will die and need to be disposed of. Which I think totally undoes the whole reason for the Prius.
