Megane Convertible 1.6 whirring/clonk noise

Have just bought another Megane for myself as my partner already has a Mk2...mine is a Mk1 1999 Monaco convertible 1.6 16v...when I turn the ignition key on there is a whirring sound with intermittent clonks coming from the left side of the car...sounds like it is behind glovebox...only bought the car on the 29th and it made this noise before starting and running fine a few times...when i went to leave work today got those noises but car would not start...was turning over at a good speed though...did eventually get it going with a bump start but I'm concerned about what the noises are I'm getting...anyone else had this problem?

Crank position sensor at fault...had to have RAC out tonight to find that out...but that will be out and cleaned tomorrow to see if that works...else a new one

hope i am right, but have you checked to see if it is the re-circulation flap of the heater? mine had a problem, as i was driving down the road you would hear it keep open & shutting every few seconds.
