STEERING LOCK BROKEN- CAR IS NOW DEAD?!

HAS ANY BODY EVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING? STEERING LOCK BROKE YESTERDAY, WARNING FLASHED UP ON DASH "STEERING LOCK BROKEN" THE CAR DROVE HOME FINE. BUT WOULDNT LOCK. I TRIED TO START IT, BUT IT WOULDNT START, ALTHOUGH THE DASH LIT UP AND THE RADIO CAME ON. TODAY IT IS COMPLETELY DEAD, NO DASH NO NOTHING... ANY IDEAS?

Start with the basics...

Replace the battery, or at the very least get it tested. How old is the car? You will probably find the battery is knackered.

THANKS FOR THE REPLY. ITS A 2004.I SWAPPED THE BATTERY WITH THE CLIO'S BATTERY AND IT STARTED. STEERING LOCK STILL WONT WORK. CAN I JUST GET A NEW BATTERY AND TO HELL WITH THE STEERING LOCK? WHAT YOU THINK?

If you can turn the steering wheel ok then yeah thats i would do personally. A replacement steering lock is big bucks mate.

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME. AS LONG AS IT WONT CAUSE ME ANY MORE PROBLEMS, I CAN LIVE WITHOUT A STEERING LOCK. CHEERS DUDE

UM DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL TYPE OF BATTERY? DO I JUST ASK FOR A BATTERY FOR A MAEGANE 1.6?

If you look on the battery you will see 3 numbers:
1) the battery type, usually a 3 digit number eg 063, 085 etc. Make sure your new one is the same;
2) cca = cold cranking amps eg 560cca, the higher number the better the performance when turning over the engine;
3) aH = amp hour eg 46aH, again the higher the number the better the battery (and more expensive!)
