Faulty Steering Lock

My 05 reg dci Dynamique, 38000 miles and regularly serviced wouldn't start on Saturday morning. The 'steering locked' message kept appearing and the engine wouldn't even turn over. The AA man couldn't fix it so towed it to the Renault dealer in Penrith. Got a ferocious shock this morning when they told me the steering lock was faulty and would cost £860 to fix.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, have I any other options and would it be worth writing to Renault U.K. for some assistance?

Cheers,
ES

My steering lock stayed on and like you could do nothing to start the car. Ended up being a fault in the wiring once that was found and fixed and ecu fault cleared the car touch wood has had no other faults

or have I spoke too soon :conf

Sent Customer Services an email but not had a reply yet. Have you had any experience of Renault making a contribution?

I am curious how much is the part alone? The job of replacement seems to be pretty straightforward and well documented in the manual in our Links section...

as far as I know the part is £280 ish + vat plus it has to be coded to the car
I don't know if parts like steering mechanism, fuel pump can only be coded once like the keycards if this isn't the case i would get a used one rather than new

Thanks to everyone who's taken an interest so far.

I've just had an acknowledgement of my email from Customer Services but there won't be a result until next week. I'll keep you posted.

According to the manual in the above link, the lock is coded directly from the key-card without using any special equipment. It is impossible to re-program it at a later stage, which makes the used locks useless.
