Strong Oily Smell?

Postby RussMarc » Wed Nov 26, 2008 7:59 am

Hi Guys,

I just had an oil and filter change on my 55 plate Megane after a 9000 mile interval. It’s a 1.6 vvt and its done 25000 miles in total.

(I did this in conjunction with having my reversing light switch changed due a fault I’m having with my reversing lights on a previous thread.)

Anyway, after driving about 25 miles to work, mainly motorway, and I park the car, there is a strong smell of oil when the engines is turned off. It’s not as strong as a petrol smell and it’s only apparent when the engine is off. It goes away after a few minutes but strong smelling nonetheless.

I’ve looked under the car a couple of hours later and there are no visible leaks from either the oil filter, oil pressure switch or the reversing switch.

I’ve checked the dipstick and the oil is clean and the level is fine.

Is this anything to worry about?

Thanks

Check the breather pipe into the head, dealers left mine off when it last got serviced.

you need to look in the engine bay for leaks not under the car as it has a cover underneath the engine.
assuming there no sign of any oil on the cover i'd say it probably just some spilt oil thats burning off, give it a few more journeys and keep checking it.
