Hi guys and girls, see if i can pick your brains at this one. Its not technically Megane related, but its Scenic related.
In Feb this year, mum's Scenic was taken for its Service/MOT. On the report, it stated that the steering rack had 'slight' play in it. The service and MOT were done by a specialist as I refuse to pay over the odds for a Renault apprentice monkey to change some filters and spark plugs!
I took the car to Renault Manchester the day after, and they had a look at it. The car is covered under the Reagroup extended warranty, and it even says on the leaflet saying whats covered, that steering racks ARE covered. Renault looked at it, agreed it had very slight play, and refused to replace it. I'm sorry, but to me, slight play means its broken, there for covered under warranty???
I was quite tempted to sue Renault for the privlege of selling me this USELESS warranty, however, considering the car was still driveable, I let it go by.
Now in November, I was driving the car the other day, and have notice a right racket coming from the steering wheel itself. It sounds like ball bearings in a glass jar clicking away, and coming from where the steering wheel fits on. Can anyone tell me if this is the steering rack itself and its about to give in or related to the steering rack???
If it is the steering rack and/or steering rack related, and if Renault refuse to replace it, I will be taking legal action against them, had quite enough of dealers messing me around, now its payback time.
Any advice would be great!! Cheers!
Jim

Re: Steering Rack?
It might be the clock spring or rotary switch. Try a search for those terms and see what comes up as this is a known fault.

To be fair, at the time, it did pass the MOT.
Don't know if steering racks come under the MOT probably do, but it came up on the service report, not the MOT. When it was done, they independent servicers said that it has play in it and it could get worse, stating a common problem with steering racks on Scenic's.
Anyway, just an update, the car is now sorted, the clicking turned out to be a clip of some sort becoming loose in the steering wheel housing unit. And I also told Renault to again check the steering rack, and this time they have changed it so the car is going good again, and hopefully no more problems will occur in that area and I wont have to pay the cost of a solicitors letter! Customer service these days, does it exist?! Least its done now.
