HELP BATTERY ALTERNATOR PROBLEMS

Postby fox » Sun Sep 21, 2008 4:15 pm

Warning light appeared saying battery low.

Took in for tests and the battery and alternator was fine.
Next day the battery was completely flat and would not hold a charge for more than 1-2 hours.

RENAULT replaced the alternator under warentee as an intermittent fault and I brought new battery.

I'm having the same problem again. Somewhere there is a problem draining power and REANULT have not found it after 3 inspections.

Everything is turned off, nothings modified.

Can anyone suggest what the problem could be.

If this is a Renault dealer then the following diagnostics should have taken place..

1: The battery should have been tested using the correct Renault diagnostic route. They will have been issued with the correct battery tester, this MUST be used, and is Automatically issued to the dealer by Renault.
Note that the dealer will have any warranty battery claim rejected if it is not used as the tester produces a failure code that must be noted on the worksheet and confirms that the tester was used.
If the battery fails the test then it would/should have been replaced under warranty.

2: The alternator charge rate etc should have been tested as per the correct diagnostic route. Not just replaced cos they were clutching at straws.. ie it might be an intermittant fault.. :banghead

3: If the alt and battery were ok then, the current draw with the ignition and all consumers switched off should have been done. The correct current draw should be around 20-30 milliamps.. If its anymore than that then you have an electrical problem..
To diagnose will require things to be unplugged to find it. Or the use of an amps clamp if current is high..

Have been taking it to an official Renault dealer as it's under warrentee. Will not name and shame them yet.

Battery could not be replaced under warrentee as was told it was only covered for two years.

Don't know what tests are being done, as am not getting much feedback. I know they connected to some software which picked up 2 faulty glow plugs.

I've left it with them for a couple of days, they mentioned that they will start unplugging things to find the fault.

New battery is okay, it holds a charge of 12.5 volts unconnected but completely flat within hours of being connected.
The new alternator is charging at 13 volts

The problem seems fixed. They found the glow plug relay was faulty and remaining active once the engine was off. Replaced under warentee.
