Whinning Noise

UPDATE

Hi ALL

Thanks for your replies and advice, I have taken the car to a Independent Renault Specialist, they think they have narrowed the noise down the the manifold inlet, (think thats what its called) on the top of the engine next to the Throttle body.

Strangly when the noise occurs in idle if the dip stick is removed the noise stops instantly.

Back into the garage tomorrow, hopefully it will finally get fixed.

Hi All

I need some help

I have a Megane 2.0 VVT CC, its developed a strange whinning noise, which appears to come from under the bonnet it sounds like a fan belt slipping but louder.

I have taken it to a local garage (i live in York there isnt a Renault dealer nearby, well there is Evans Halshaw though after reading reviews on here I decided against this as an option).

They have changed the fan belt, the problem continued.
They then added some coolent conditioner, the noise stopped (improved for a while), though after about a week it came back gradually getting louder.
The garage said its propably the water pump, they have changed this and the timing belt.
The noise stopped, however they created a problem on the seal and oil started leaking (albeit small amounts) from the engine. I took the car back for this to be repaired and the noise came back almost instantly.

The noise.
When I started the car in the morning there is no noise.
I drive towards work on motorway 60+ mph, there is no noise.
When I get nearer the city centre (slower speeds 30 mph or so) and the engine is warm the noise returns.
The noise can be stopped by accelerating slighlty.
Once the noise is back, the car can sit in idle and the noise is present.

Has anyone experienced similar problems?
What can I try next?

Thanks, your help is appreciated.

did they also change the pulleys with the waterpump and the cam belt? or maybe it is one of the aggrgates driven by the (what you call fan belt - Megane has an electrical fan) belt, i.e. AC-compressor, generator or sth like that.

good service man should be able to find this....

Thanks for your response

When they put the cam belt on they charged me for the belt and kit (I assume rightly or wrongly that this includes everything they need to change like the pulleys), though am not sure.

Hi.. I'm totally new to Meganes but with sounds of this nature, one thing you may try - "carefully" however... is to use a sounding stick (such as a long screwdriver or a wooden dowel which actually works best). The idea being to wait for the noise to occur then go round each of your ancilliaries in turn placing the stick to your ear and listen. You'll be suprised at what you can hear. check both ends of altenator.. and generally you'll be able to home in on the source even if its internal.
TIP; put your ear to the side of the stick and it wont 'punch' you in the ear it she's kicks.. :)
Please keep away from pulleys, belts and fans - speaks for itself of course!

Hope you find it.

Hi there,

I do have the exact same noise,I have posted this problem before, mine is linked with the AC (that is what I noticed I might be wrong though),I usually do not use it a lot,in hot days and when I drive for long distances then I switch OFF the AC shortly before reaching home,I start to hear this whinning noise,It is constant and louder when I am on the neutral (N) position, when I park the car and drive it next day there is no noise what so ever, the problem is ,it is also intermitent,I mean it does not happen each time I do this scenario.

I am afraid to go to the dealer,as I know they will not know the cause and they will change many unnecessary parts until they find the cause if they do find it,I prefer to leave it for now until it is constant.
