Brakes - front and back

Postby chevin » Fri Aug 08, 2008 12:23 pm

Boys,

Have a Nov 2003 - 5 dr Dynamique. Had third service at 43 k miles this week. Was told by local dealer that my front discs are on the limit (22 mm) and back are too 6.95 mm - cost of each will be £ 300 ea.

Overall to bring the car up to date they suggested £ 1700, this is as exhaust/brakes/timing/wiring loom (airbag warning light problem).

Anyone else found this ? Was lucky this time as last time they totally forgot about the car sat in theri car park for "service"

Cheers

so £600 for brakes all round? Far too much.....go somewhere else with that, especially as you have no more warranty.....

Boys - my query was more as do they really need doing, if the front discs start life at 24 mm and they are 22mm now, the rears start at 8 mm and are 7 mm ?

Agree I can get the work done elsewhere cheaper

Front discs:
K4J engine (1.4) -- 22-19.8 mm
all others -- 24-21.8 mm
Rear discs:
all models -- 8-6.5mm

Guys, it is all in the original manual, not Haynes -- see my message in Links... The text is in French, but the numbers are not!

Good brands?

Look at EBC (type EBC in Google UK). You will need solid (not vented or grooved) discs. I am using EBC GreenStuff pads all around -- they feel much better than OEM and less dust. Moving the bearings and the ABS rings from the old rear only discs into the replacements is a tricky business -- ask your garage if they do it. This is why Renault supplies OEM rear discs with bearings/ABS installed, and they are much more expensive. You may need 1L of DOT-4 brake fluid (1L DOT-4 Bendix is £5 from my local GSF), as brakes need to be bled every second year. If the car is 5 y.o. then one may consider replacing the front brake hoses. Any garage can do this job, BTW.

no way, i cant believe anyone would charge that for discs and pads. i was quoted first 3130 for the front discs and pads, then £170. i took off the disc and measured it, once i found out what size i needed i bought two front discs and a full set of front pads for £32 all in from a car parts shop, theyre easy to fit as well. garages are nothing but conmen and robbers!
also an easy way to tell is your discs need replacing is to feel near the edge, if there is a prominent lip then theres every chance that they either need replacing straight away or will very very soon.
