I use Halfords own stuff for my 1.5dci. The strange thing is that the book recomends 5W40 but during my last service I noticed they put in 10W40.

Re: what oil megane 1.9 dci
I have replaced the standard oil Renault filled in the last time with the Top Level oil from german petrol company Jet....I payed 12 euros (8 pounds) per litre plusfilter plus labour fee which made it 80 (50 pounds) euros in total....which is ok for me as I have two left hands....
I had the impression that the engine runs more smoothly.....and regarding the fact that it is a 0W40 oil the car has no loss of oil in the last 5000 kms.....so thumbs up for that, would choose it again anytime.

Surely it will survive until next service or what do you think?

Yea..., unless it does not have ACEA B4 (European DCI standard) or unless your driving falls into "extreme conditions" category.
Please note that I've seen only a couple of 10w40 oil with ACEA B4, all others are only B3. Renault issued a Technical note forbidding use of their Motrio 10w40 B3 oil.
Please also note that short journeys (under 10 miles), low average speed (well below 45mph), high-speed motorway blasts, etc. are counted as extreme conditions and call for intermediate oil changes.
Well, ask Oilman for expert advice -- the link to the appropriate thread is in the earlier message.

Dont say that... ow dear.... Oilman you are needed. I am about to embark upon a 3-4k mile journey of 90% motorway driving. Would 10W40 that Renault put in be able to do the job?

Oilman watches the thread pointed at in my earlier message and not this one. Please post your question there and provide the details he is asking for.
Non synthetic B3 oil is perfectly adequate for the engine, it just doesn't last long. ACEA B4 oils can hold much more contaminants without depositing them in the critical parts of the engine. I guess it will be OK for your journey, but you may want to change it earlier than the next service.
