Brake Pads & Discs - 1.9 DCi

Postby Mattj » Sun May 11, 2008 7:06 am

Hi
After some severe grinding noise on the rear - it turned out that the rear brakes need replacing. What discs and pads do I need?

Done some investigating on the net at work and found that EBC Brakes - I can get uprated pads and discs for £187.86 delivered but they dont supply ABS rings or wheel bearings - is it possible to use the old ones or is it advisable to replace??

Also looking on Brakepartssuperstore.org.uk - they say that there are two types of pad - one for the bosch caliper and one for the ATE caliper - as the car is at home does anybody know what caliper was fitted to a 1.9 DCi 3 door - '54' plate ??

Also I got a friend who is confidient that he can fit them for a couple of drinks - I know this would be the cheaper option but who much would a dealer charge for fitting (meant to have the car in on tuesday for other warranty repairs but could cancel them and get brakes done) - what do people think? is it worth them doing it for warranty and proof of fitment seeing as I have full service history??

Cheers for help
Matt

Moving bearings from one hub to the other is not a problem. Furthermore, bearings are sold separately in case you realise that they need replacement. The ABS rings, however, are not sold separately and they are fragile. They can be removed, but it is a risk...

My 53 1.9dci expression has DP2680 GreenStuff pads in the rear. I think only 1.4 has different brakes...

Find torque values, etc. in the repair manual in Links, in this file in particular:

Sounds about right to me too. At my 24,000 mile service I had to have all 4 discs and pads replaced. I let the dealer do it and the total was about £800.

Am i missing something here? I replaced discs and pads on wifes saxo (before she decided to part ex it!! why do they do that  ) and it was about £90 and took me an hour. Now i know the Megane might be slightly more complex than that but surely not a few hundred quids worth :? Think i'll take a look at mine to see what state they're in and then get on to bank about remortgaging if they need doing  Also 24000 miles doesn't sound much for discs to need changing is that normal? Mines up to 71k and still on original discs.

Well, mine is a CC so it weighs a ton and a half. Also, I am an aggresive driver (apparently) so I tend to pound the brakes pretty hard.

So, compared to a Saxo which weighs about, oooh, I dunno, 300 pounds fully laden? ;) then I would hope that the discs and pads in a 1.9DCi are a heck of a lot bigger (and more expensive) than on a biscuit tin.

Let's see...

Replacement of all four disks, pads, brake hoses, boots/bolts of brake callipers and brake fluid is approximately 2 hour job at £50 per hour. Rear disks with fitted bearings and ABS rings are about £160 for a pair. Front EBC disks are about £90. All EBC GreenStuff performance pads are about £90. Caliper repair kits will add another £100, hoses also £100, fluid £5, nuts -- £15. So any price above £660 is a rip-off. Even this price is too high as the repair kits and the hoses are not needed at this mileage.

misty2k, your 24000 service probably also included checking the horn, replacement of all wiper blades, oil/air filters and changing oil to fully synthetic, which justifies additional £140, thus bringing the total cost to the quoted £800. Am I right?

I guess not -- they are stealers after all! :devil

Having said that, I understand that for many of us there exist no other option that to use their service and pay through the nose for their tea and biscuits consumed professionally at industrial rate... :-(

OK, yeah, I had forgotten to take account of the rest of the service when I got the news of the work needing to be done...

The Service Invoice is broken down and shows:
Replace front pads and discs - £255.86 (£300.64 incl vat)
Replace back pads and discs - £290.53 (£341.37 incl vat)
27k Service (I had it a bit early) - £163.31 (£191.89 incl vat)
GRAND TOTAL (when you add the courtesy car) - £854.92

They did have the decency to tell me not to let them do the wipers or tyres there though and that I should shop around instead. That made swallowing the cost of the brakes easier.

I tend to go for dealer though as mine is on a finalce agreement so I am aiming for as high a value as possible when I take it back to them to trade-in in a year or so... who knows, maybe I'll trade in for a Meg III CC.

Reading from Renault documents:
GO REPLACE 2 FRONT DISCS AND PADS -- 0.8h
K4J, K4M, K9K, F4R and F9Q engines

Parts:
Front disc EBC D982 -- £39.90 (inc VAT)
Front disc EBC Ultimax Sport Slotted -- £69.33 (inc VAT)
Front pads (set of 4) EBC regular -- £17.90 (inc VAT)
Front pads (set of 4) EBC GreenStuff -- 47.84 (inc VAT)

Hub nuts (2) Renault £5

Total:
£102.7 + 0.8*LabourRate (regular parts)
£191.50 + 0.8h*LabourRate (performance parts)

So, how much was LabourRate?
(300.64-102.7)/0.8=247.42 pounds per hour (if regular parts were used)
(300.64-191.50)/0.8=136.42 pounds per hour (if performance parts were used)

Which smiley is appropriate for this stealer? ---- :kneel

why not buy the parts yourself from a factors and take em to your local garage. they'll charge not a lot.

or, have a go yourself. it aint that hard to do and you'll save yourself hundreds

I totally agree. £300 for the front discs and pads is extortionate and a disgrace.
