Just took my car for its MOT, it failed ;o(

it has to go back on wednesday to get fixed and re-mot'd...gutted!

What did it fail on?

Erm quite a lot - not got the sheet with me

from memory it was tyres (my fault), brakepads sticking, wipers (not clearing the windscreen) and something about front velocity joint gaiters and something else which i cant remember off the top of my head

The CV Joint Gaitor will be a messy job so it's just as well that the garage is doing it.

what model do you have?...my 1.4 04 plate sailed through its MOT yesterday then duly decided to breakdown today, just to keep me on my toes.

was it your regular garage doing the MOT work?

hi, its a 1.9dci, 2004 plate,

its done 54k and had a service at the end of jan so i was a bit shocked that it wasnt picked up then.

The mot was done by evans halshaw in middlesborugh who i tend to use most the time, apart for stuff like tyres and breakpads.

Annoying but atleast there's nothing major. Gaitors splitting is a fairly common problem with lots of cars. Hopefully it happened quite recently (good chance if it wasn't noticed at service) and the CV joints themselves aren't worn.

Broken clip on a CV boot? It may be not too bad as Renault CV boots are made of hard material and stay in place even without the clip. This prevents the joint from contamination.

Just don't let them use a cheap repair kit. Renault uses a fully synthetic moly grease produced by Mobil (it is in the manual...).

When my Megane was in for its starting screw ups, Renault Bolton found my O/S/F CV boot joint clip had broken, £46.13 inc VAT was the cost, part is £1.68 takes about 30 mins to do, and they did admit they have had a few Megane's with the clips breaking

Have you checked what grease they used? I bet no and I also bet it was something cheap and nasty...

Problem as we know is a lot of garages out there are slightly"untrustworthy" even if you took your own grease in how can you be sure they use it? Apart from standing there while they do it. Often wondered this when reading other threads about taking your own oil when getting it changed.

DIY? ...or a better garage?

I have no idea just let them do the job. Car has done 4500 miles since then and its been fine, with it been serviced during that time and nothing has been reported.

In there defence, with all the cowboy garages that are around today, when they do a job on mine or my mums Scenic, its done professionally, quickly, returned cleaned inside and out and the problems havent come back...

Unlike when I had my two Citroen C2's where the garage were that incompetent my dog could do a better job. One problem that occured on one car was the ECU light came on with the car stalling, this should have come up on the computer diagnosis, but instead the monkeys gave me back the keys saying 'we couldn't find a problem' with the ECU light still on. Luckily, i know a decent garage round the corner from me who hooked it upto the computer and found all sorts of problems, using the same software Citroen were using on my car. Perfect example of total ignorance, incompetence and disgusting behaviour of main dealers.

Luckily, I have had no problems with Renault dealers other than mix ups over extended warranties and what is covered under it.

Just checked the works ehhet there are two things they could have used:

graisse 180g or copaslip 5g tube

"graisse" is a generic word for a lubricant. They were supposed to use MOBIL CVJ 825 BLACK STAR or MOBIL EXF57C, 180g, part number 7707366100. I compared the original stuff to a couple of popular in the UK moly-greases (inc Castrol) some time ago. The OEM stuff virtually does not melt, is very black and very sticky. Looks like it contains at least 4 times more MoS2 than Castrol. Only Granville CV grease was close to it (or at least better than the others), but clearly made with a mineral base stock.

Ask them (in writing) for details, and they may start offering free service vouchers to avoid a scandal.
