How to remove drivers airbag?

Hi guys

I find myself needing to replace my airbag rotary switch, but need to find out how to remove the driver's airbag without the thing going bang! :D

Managed to find the part number on Dialogys, but my version has never allowed me to view the workshop manuals - don't know why! I have also PMd silencer51 on the subject because he has replaced many of these I believe. Does anyone have any detailed info on the subject? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

BTW - my local stealer wont even give me a ballpark figure for the job, they want to do a diagnostic check on it first - £88.12 - and if they do the work they will deduct it from the total cost! What would that be then? I asked. I couldn't tell you, we will have to do the diagnostics first was the reply!!!! :)

Gobsmacked but any help would be great.

Regards

Rob

disconnect the battery and leave it for at least 30 mins mate, more to be safe. take the cover off the steering wheel, unplug the airbag and remove.

thats a rough guide anyway. just make sure the system discharges by leaving the battery disconnected for long enough

Cheers Deano but it looks like there is no cover on the steering wheel (on Dialogys anyway) rather that the airbag/cover is a single item and you remove it as a whole by popping a small screwdriver in a hole on the rear of the bottom portion of the wheel and slide it upwards.

Don't mean to sound ungrateful but I'm trying to avoid blowing myself to pieces, this is what Renault say about the issue -

Before removing a component from the safety system, it is essential to check the airbag computer using the Diagnostic tool.

When this function is activated all the triggering lines are disabled and the airbag warning light on the instrument panel lights up (ignition on).

Never handle the pyrotechnic systems (pretensioners
or airbags) near to a source of heat or
naked flame - they may be triggered.

Just trying to be safe! any further info greatly appreciated!

I have sucessfully done this myself, if you follow the procedure of removing the battery for 30 mins you should be ok (i take no responsability if it goes pearsheped for somone else)
After that its fairly simple. I got my a complete rotary switch assembley from these guys for about £50 IIRC.

All the blah about locking the airbag is just that, blah!

On my car everything reset back to normal, airbag light went out and the steering lock resumed function

thanks for the info, i picked up the assy this morning and had a little panic on the way back as it didnt have the radio control stalk on it, i am assuming that can come off the old and plugged into the new assy?

The only thing i'm still not sure on is how to get the wheel off, i've had a good sniff around the backl of the wheel but cant see anything obvious on how to remove it, is there some hidden hole somewhere??

Ta, Mike :)

:D with the info you all provided, i did the job in just under an hour, including about 20 mins just leaving it discharging. Re-connected the battery and all works fine and the airbag and service lights went out and stayed out, woohoo!

Thanks again chaps 8) :D

Oh bugger!!! - isn't it inside your service booklet or on a sticker inside your Renault wallet? (the big black thing with your handbook and stuff inside)
