'Throaty' Engine Noise / Sounds like exhaust has blown

Megane 2004 1.6 CC. 38,000 miles.

The engine noise from my megane has become very load and 'throaty' recently.

It sounded like it was a hole in the exhaust, however that's been checked out and the exhaust is fine.

I put it in for a diagnostic check (not at a Renault Dealer), and no problems were found.

My mpg has also dropped from around 40 to 32.

Can anyone help please?

One of the sensors in the engine bay probably needs cleaning. I can't remember what its called right now (havn't slept in three days lol) but its on the top side of the engine.

The symptoms you describe indicate a problem with the engine's air intake system. Probably a pipe has come loose or ruptured, allowing more air in, thus messing up fuel management and fuel consumption...
