Stereo completely dead

This morning when I started my Megane 1.9 dci (06 plate) there was nothing from the stereo at all. I'm sure that I didn't turn it off the last time I used it, and no amount of button pressing would get anything to react. I haven't got any error messages coming up at all.

On calling the Renault dealer they say it needs to go away for checking because the stereos aren't made by Renault. This means 14 days without a stereo (3 hours per day in the car). I think I might go mad.

By the way, I've got a radio, standard cd and 6 cd changer.

I was wondering if anyone else had suffered a similar problem. Oh, and i tried turning it off and back on again, it didn't work.

Hi Catherine,

I have exactly the same problem!
Got into the car yesterday morning turned on the radio.... Nothing!

I was wondering if the cold weather had anything to do with it.
When I got into the car is was -10c.

Mine is a 1.9dci on a 56 plate.

14 days with the radio will be hell.

Going to call my dealer later.
Please update this when you can.

Cheers,

Mike

The radio/CD's are made by VDO

Any decent car audio repair specialist should be able to fix the unit?

Can't remember but I think there is a fuse that may have blown somewhere in the chain, hence no radio :(

If the car is still under warranty then you should be offered a loan unit whilst yours is away for repair.

Can I suggest you contact Renault customer services and complain and register with My Renault

If that fuse has gone you with have lost air con (you won't notice that in this weather) and your accessory socket. Infact one of the other fuses may affect it aswell. hmmmmmmmm

Thanks for the tips everyone, I'll try the air con tonight to see if that works (brrr). It may be a fuse because I've noticed that when the headlights are on I've got no illumination on any of the radio controls (not even the on/off button). However, the illumination on the 6 cd changer below is working. In the meantime I've started to notice all sorts of squeaks and rattles in the car I never knew I had!

Hi all

As an interesting update I have just took my car in to have the radio looked at and while I was there another lady brought hers in for the same thing!

I questioned the service guy about it and he says that they had been told by Renault that they were effected by the cold weather and they had had four in since the weekend!

The COLD weather? They shou;d try Germany or Sweden? I did mention this to him and he said that it may be that different units are fitted to cars to go to the middle east and that they may have been fitted to the wrong cars!

How long before the next fault.....? Maybe in summer the windcreeen wipers will stop if it reaches 25C....

Utter utter peice of Crap

Did they give you any idea of cost and how long it would take to fix?

I have had a couple of Renaults before this; a 25, and a 19. They were both excellent cars and I did over 100k in both without a hitch.

It seems that since the early 90's the build quality has been on a steep downwards path.

This is the last Renault that I buy.

Hi there, I took my 06 plate 1.9DCi into Hylton Worcester for exactly the same reason today. They fixed it while I waited - loose connector or summink. Took them about 45mins and was covered under warranty. It's the same stereo coz it still had my CD in after the car was handed back :-P

Well the air con still works. I tried it last night, driving home at 4DegC. Not for long though. So from what was said earlier in this posting it's probably not a fuse then? I did wonder whether the cold weather might have had something to do with it. I might try to contact another Renault garage who might be able to have a look at it before 8th of March. And I've got 7 cd's stuck in there, so I'm hoping I get them back

I'm not sure that my aircon has ever worked!
The only thing that happens when you press the button is the orange light comes on! No more noise nothing. I took it into the dealer while it was still in warranty and they re-gassed the unit and said it was fine. I wonder how much extra I paid for an orange light?

some stereos have their own fuse (looks like a small glass version of an ordinary household fuse) as extra backup to the car fuse, some have it on the rear of the stereo others are internal, just a thought

Took mine in yesterday.
Fixed in about 5 mins. Just a case of taking it out, unplugging it, putting it back in and resetting it. Apparently Renault are well aware of the problem and are just collecting information at the moment. Nothing will be announced until sometime in March.
Fixed for free by the very nice people at my local dealership.

By the way if this site gets any slower it will start going backwards!

my other halfs 56 reg Clio had exactly the same problem last week (when we were getting the really cold nights). Was 'fixed' by popping the stereo unit out (luckily I had a set of the 'key' things from when I fitted a cd changer to my meg), unplugging all the connecters and then putting it all back together again (and then going back into the house to dig out the radio code-doh!)!

I figured the cold weather must have caused a small amount of condensation inside the unit causing it to 'crash' somehow, and resetting it sorted it out.

Hello!

Yesterday there was -20C and I got same problem - stereo dead, but clock&temperature display illumination stays on even after putting on alarm.

If tomorrow battery will not be dead, I'll try to disconnect/connect stereo unit.
Sorry for my bad English.
