Fitting new rear brake pads 04 15DCi

Postby meggie 24 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 9:00 pm

I have an 04 Meggie 15 DCI, the time has come to replace the rear discs and pads (40k 0n the clock) It seems a bit early for this kind of work, but hey ho...

My question is how can you fully retract the wheel cylinder piston, clearly there is an integral self adjusting mechanism for the handbrake and this is holding the piston in an extended position consequently I cannot get the new pads in.

Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

The pistons need to be screwed in to retract them.. Use a pair of long nose pliers or similar..

Thanks for that Webcode,

I am also changing the rear discs and am having real trouble removing the bearings. So much so that I think I have wrecked one of them. Do you have any experience with removing these, and replacing them in the new disc? I am also having some difficulty sourcing new bearings from bearing stockists. None of the numbers seem to match.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi there,

I replaced my brakes shortly after getting my megane, and had to replace the rear discs after only 27K on the clock which baffled me! The action needs a good bit of pressure and twist to shift the piston. If your still stuck screwing in the pistons then you could maybe buy or borrow a caliper rewind kit which will help you reset the pistons.

I have never replaced the bearings before as I just replaced the whole unit to save time and the fact that my motor factors man couldnt find the discs without bearings :? .

Hope this helps

Thanks David, I was not offered discs with bearings, only discs without, buying the bearings and having them pressed in cost an extra £135!!.

I had success winding one of the caliper pistons back, but at the moment the other one rotates OK but the piston does not retract. Have you any more info on the caliper retraction tool?

Thanks again
