I think they're called gas struts.

Not hijacking the thread, but if your going to replace them you could "bling" them up a bit.
While working a well known DIY store i spotted clip on chrome pipe covers, thought I could make use of them somewhere. The result, chrome boot lifters.

Sorry for the poor photo quality (was taken on a replacement phone, not even my own phone)

real easy, look at each end of the strut there is a small metal rounded clip, ease it up with a screwdriver the strut will then pull off (its basically a ball knuckle joint), just make sure that the boot lid is supported before you start on the first, one strut is not man enough to hold the boot up

edit PS i used a nice length of wood cut to size to hold the boot up whilst doing the job on an old cavalier, help from a mate also welcome just in case it goes pear shaped

As a matter of interest, when you press the electric button to open the boot does it open with out you having to 'pull it up'? (gas struts have enough force to push the door up)

The reason i ask is when i press the button to open the boot i have to 'pull it up' The gas struts have no 'power' at all, they do hold it open but thats it.
