Alan, is it exhaust fumes or fuel? is the smell coming in from the air vents or is it just in the car
if fuel smell not coming in from vents ...had an astra a few years ago with fuel smell in car (eau de petrol) found under the rear seats the top of the fuel tank where the level sender is bolted in, well the bolts had come loose, a quick tweak up not too heavy handed and the smell went, a mate of mine had the same thing with same model did same trick for him and earnt myself a few beers. if you pull up your rear seat behind the driver seat the meg has a the same sort of arrangement so it could be from there.
if a fuel smell from vents there must be something loose fuel pipe wise under the bonnet.
if its exhaust smell possible holed exhaust, or worn gasket close to manifold area not looked too close on meg exhaust system but a lot of motors have a cone shaped soft gasket on a flexible joint which is secured by bolts with springs not far from manifold and before front box, these wear after a while allowing gas to flow out i found one on yet another old car where i could feel the gas coming out by putting my hand near it when engine running be careful it gets hot..
my meg chucks exhaust fumes in car after reversing on start up which is nice.
any hoo above are just guesses hope you get it sorted
